  1. Simply, I want to join two avi's so that I can then convert and burn them to DVD as one film

Can I do this a) with freeware, b) without having to re-encode?

I have looked in the tool section, but am not sure whether AVIDemux or Cut Assistant is what I'm after

    Thanks

If they are exactly the same, you can join them with VirtualDub with the 'Direct stream copy' option.

But if you are going to use them in a DVD, it's better not to join them and avoid sync issues. Just encode each separately to DVD compliant MPEG-2 video and audio. Then add both to your authoring program and let it do the 'joining'. A lot less problems that way. Check for MP3 VBR audio before joining or encoding also. That will almost always cause sync problems.

Ah, I thought sync issues would be a problem

If I am using GUI for DVD author, how do I import the two avi's so that they play as one film rather than two films?

Basically, with the DVDs I have created so far, I have been having compatibility issues from one set top box to another with mulitple films via a menu (on my box the DVD is fine, however on some players, the menu jumps or sticks, yet on others not all the films are accessible etc)

I am not sure what is at the root of these issues so just want to put one film on one DVD with no menu and keep everything as simple as possible for the moment
