Hi, I have a whole load of video files on my computer that I want to play on a portable video player. The videos play fine on the player, but haven't got sound.

Does anyone know of a way i can just recode the audio of a video file, without converting the entire video (because of the time it would take to encode a large number of videos)?

Obviously i would need something that ends up with mpeg layer-3 audio, which is not out of sync with the movie.

    Any suggetions are welcome.

    Cheers !

Yeah, sure, but what are the bitrate requirements of the player? Post some info and it'll be easy to make this happen.

It's an Archos AV700, I cpied the specs of the archos website

Video recording: MPEG-47 SP and stereo sound, optimised resolution for TV up to 640x480 @ 30 f/s, in AVI format

    Video playback: MPEG-47 SP with B-Frames with stereo sound. Near DVD quality up to 720x480 @ 30 f/s (NTSC), 720x576 @ 25 f/s (PAL), AVI file format. WMV9 (including protected files) up to 352x288 @ 30 f/s, and 800 KBit/s4.

Music recording: From an analog source in stereo sound for WAV (PCM & ADPCM) format.

Music playback: Stereo MP3 decoding @ 30-320 kb/s CBR & VBR, WMA (including protected WMA files), WAV (PCM & ADPCM).

so i guess the last bit is the most relevant, 30-320kb/s?
    hope that's what you mean.
    thanks!!

Pretty impressive specs on that player. Don't hesitate to send me one for my efforts, 'mkay ?

Okay, this script should work in most cases. Download and unzip file from the link below. Place AVIs into same folder as the unzipped app -

Note: Your AVI names must NOT have spaces in them

    Bad: This Is my.AVI
    Good: This_Is_My.AVI

    Double Click AVI2MP3.BAT to run.

When Done, the folder will look like this:

    AVI2MP3.BAT
    example_file.avi
    Another.avi
    Yet_Another.avi

    ffmpeg.exe
    lame.exe
    mencoder.exe
    normalize.exe
    ReadMe.txt
    New-example_file.avi
    New-Another.avi
    New-Yet_Another.avi

Files with the "New" prefix are the ones encoded with 192kbs stereo mp3. If you prefer a different bit rate for the audio, open the AVI2MP3.BAT file with Notepad and change the line that starts with the word "Lame". You can't miss it. Also, the script normalizes the audio, so loudness levels should be fairly consistent on the Mp3 encoded AVIs.

Your original AVIs won't be touched at all, so if you aren't happy with the results, no harm done. Of course, remember to remove the AVIs from the folder once you're done doing the audio conversion.

Hi, I have finally managed to find some time to convert the audio on a whole load of avi files, but when i come run it as you say above, i get a "mencoder.exe - unable to locate component" box saying "this application has failed to start because intly.dll was not found. Re-installing the spplication may fix the problem.

then i get a whole load of script in a C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe box and then the same message again.

then it closes and nothing happens.

    any ideas?

    much appreciated

Does intly.dll exist in the zip file Soopafresh provided? If so, is it in a subdirectory within the zip archive? The zip probably needs to be extracted with the folder structure within intact. (Most mencoder/mplayer archives I see usually have at least two subdirectories.)

no its not in the zip folder at all that i can see or find!

    just

    AVI2MP3.BAT
    ffmpeg.exe
    lame.exe
    mencoder.exe
    normalize.exe
    ReadMe.txt

Readme contains only where the code was sourced from originally

Oh, sorry about that Yeah, I noticed that Mencoder was looking for that .DLL. I'll post an updated one in a minute.

This one doesn't need that .dll file, and it also does better muxing.
