I've got a linksys router (befsx41) and it's just horrible. I've always had problems with firmware being insanely unstable and for the last week or so, AIM has been knocking me off every five minutes or so. Also, it won't work properly with Azureus or other programs. Does anyone have any advice/current deals on a good wireless router (or switch) with a built in hardware firewall? Specifically, not a linksys.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Is there that much difference between the R and the X models? The BEFSR41 I had was solid as a rock for years. I suspect I could dig it out of the mothballs and it would still work like a champ.

Dilbert, don't go dlink if your doing ANY wireless. I've not horrible problems with their wireless equipment.

That being said I've had good luck with Linksys in the past, but if your convinced its a programming issues instead of a issue with your specific router I'd suggest SMC or Netgear.

I have a wireless Linksys router I bought a year ago and it still works like a champ....could be a programming issue you're having or something.

Well, maybe it's just that linksys sucks on a case by case basis. I just know that a lot of other people have had problems with the model I've got- and I really didn't want to dump $80 to a $100 on something that will develop the same problems. Any of you linksys guys use Port Forwarding or any of those features successfully on your boxes?

Both port forwarding and port triggering (depending on the app) without issue. Dilbert, if you haven't done so, check here:

    http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/BEFSX41/BEFSX41index.htm

    Step by step.

BTW, the AIM issues you're having sounds like the lease time for DHCP is set too short on your router. As for Azureus, I had an issue where it would lock my computer. Without it running, my computer could run for days without being bogged down by anything. Start Azureus, it would freeze within an hour. Turned out it was the Java build I was using. Try updating and see what happens. I'm not sure if it still holds true, but I remember a lot of torrent sites did not like Azureus anyway, you may want to look into BitTornado.

I have a wired Linksys and a wireless Netgear. Both have worked fine for years now.

I threw in the towel and purchased a WRT56G, so far so good.
