  1. I'm trying to burn an MPEG4 avi from a DVD movie with a separate (optional) subtitle file to play in VLC or MPlayer (whatever is best). I've searched the forum and read the manual but I'm confused by the different formats and options. I've extracted from a video_ts folder to .sub format for a movie I had already encoded but it wouldn't show up in either vlc or mplayer (it was properly selected in both along with the movie). Is this the wrong kind of .sub file? Do I need to extract from a vob file?

Can anyone tell me how to do this? If possible, I'd like to make sub file for avi's I've already encoded. Or do I need to re-encode the entire movie?

  2. The simpler to keep subtitles as a separate file is to extract them in VobSub format (.idx/.sub). However, only ffmpegX can playback them (or mplayer in command line mode).

Otherwise you should convert them to .srt by means of optical recognition (will need proofreading with a text editor).
