  1. I am using the SOny DRU 500A with the original firmware and currently use the DVD-PRO DVD-R's from Meritline. I know that they don't burn at 4X and am looking for DVD-R's that will actually burn at 4X. I haven't updated the firmware because, to be honest, I don't know how to disable the DMA settings on XP.
I am also trying to keep the cost under $2. I have been looking at the Ritek G04, Optodisc and BeAll's but am willing to try another brand if they will burn at 4X actual speed.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I've only tried the 2 that came in my 4X media sampler from Meritline, but so far the Ritek G04's seem to work great in the DRU500A w/2.0f firmware -- better than any other -R media I've tried, and maybe even a little better than the 4X RICOHJPN +R's that have been so common lately. I'm thinking of buying a bunch more.

  3. I have used about 300 silver top cheap Ritek 4x DVD-R without a single bad disc. Also I have burned TDK DVD+R and DVD-R 4x. The only media I have had problems with is Verbatim 4x DVD+R and Apple 4x DVD-R.

  5. Can anyone give me details on how to turn off DMA settings on XP so that I can update the firmware? On the instructions on teh update page it says taht if you do it wrong, you can turn the DVD burner into a useless piece of metal.

Also, has anyone tried the Princo 4X?

You disable DMA in windows device manager. I have been burning Princo 4x printable DVD-R in my Sony DRU500ax at 4x speed without any problems.
