I want to start a new topic for the Modix HD-3520.

Discussing it under HD-3510 didn't seem appropriate anymore.

The manufacturer is DTS Infocom. www.dtsinfo.co.kr.

US sale and support is www.divxtech.com.

    hudsonf,

Why not, this just came out (about two weeks ago). So, it is very new and latest.

Anyway, I couldn't find more appropriate forum to start in. Any advice?

    To the rest,

I went into the support site and saw that they found a bug in the firmware 6.1.12 using FAT32. They have issued a new version 6.1.21. I have NTFS with version 6.1.12 and didn’t experience any problem. It has been a week and I have been using the device almost everyday (I feel that its stable enough). I really don’t want to upgrade unless I have to (had a bad experience once trying to upgrade a firmware on Phillips divx/dvd player).

Is anyone using the latest firmware with NTFS? Is there any issues? Any improvements over the previous firmware?

  4. This thing looks great but would've been excellent if it would record too. They should've added a LSI capture chip with S-Video/component/hdmi/dv input.

  5. For those who have this player:

Does it overheat to the point of shutting itself down from time to time?

Also, does the unit play the devices attach to it via USB directly, or you have to copy files to the HDD within the unit itself in order for it to play the file? In other words, will the unit play via the USB port the files on my digital camera and portable external HDD?

I am thinking about getting the unit, but if it does not play things directly from USB devices, then it is a lot work to copy things to the unit. Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

My unit is on 24 hr/day. I did shut it off time to time in order to connect it to my PC but other than that its always on. When I’m not playing video, its pumping audio through out the house. I have it set to play my M3U files and transmit via FM. I can pickup my music any where in the house that way. Cheaper than wiring the whole house for sound.

The unit is warm to the touch. I did open the cover and the hard drive is hot but it never shut itself down.

Yes, the unit plays the media files through the USB directly. There is no need to copy files. You don’t even need a hard drive within the unit as long as the USB is connected to an external USB hard drive. So far, I have attached external USB hard drive and 1GB memory key. I’ll try my camera and mp3 player and repost.

Only component for hi def and composite for regular.

This was meant to be portable without skipping on the good stuff.

How does this unit compare to the MviX5000

MviX is available at Canadian funds
and the Modix is available in US funds
    + shipping + duty + exchange
    (gets expensive)

If anyone has any reviews of either
    unit would be helpful.

    Thanks

    ebin,

Generally, the HDD based media player falls in to two categories, standard definition and high definition. It seems that most of the manufacturers are using SigmaDesign video processor either EM8510 series or EM8620L series. Later is the high definition processor. I tried to categorize the make and model based on the processor series.

    EM8510 series:
    Mediagate MG-35
    Modix HD-3510
    Mvix MV-4000U
    Mvix MV-5000U
    Tvix M-3000U

    EM8620L series:
    Modix HD-3520
    Tvix HD M-5000U

I guess above are the popular ones. There are lot more out there that uses different processors and they tend to all fall under the standard resolution. So far, Modix and Tvix are the only two with the high def offerings. In the months to come, you should see other make and models with high def capabilities.

It supports HD divx and xvid file resolution upto 1920x1080. However, I have only tested HD Divx upto 720 and WMV9 upto 1080.

I have been looking at these types of players for a couple weeks now.Glad to see talk of them to get info.A little on the pricy side for me right now, but will likely get one soon enough.
Been reading on this model and the Mivx one all over ebay.In fact, thats how I came to find these things.
Anyway, from what I have read, to answer the above poster,,,,
QUESTION 8: Does it support .M2K files and Hi-Def Quicktime files?
ANSWER 8: No, but I’ll check with the developers.

That was posted on the 6th of this month on the DivxTech.com forum, so maybe after a few firmware updates?

I was really hoping the guys at Philips would put out more firmware for the 642/37 to handle more than it does now, but looks like that player may die out soon. Can still get them ( I bought 4! ) but seems support for them really is left to people like us and geeks who can make their own 3rd party stuff.
So I am now in the hunt for one of these.
It may just be from reading, but it almost seems like a pain in the butt to get this all going.I read the PDF manual for this but maybe it was the way it was written?
Something like this makes it so much easier than wondering if the DVD player your parents have or friends have supports DivX/XviD or if it even likes the media you have them on! A simple hook up to the TV and your set. What I really like is the fact that it is so small and compact.I have to wonder if this has any baring on heat issues though.Though I imagine placed in a well ventalted area it shouldnt be a problem.

I'll be checking ebay frequently to get a good price on this, though with the popularity right now, I may still pay about $300 + for one.

Haven’t tried nero format yet. This will be my project for this week.

Is there a site where I can download a short test clip?

  22. Hi
When I read the modix specifications, and read this topic I thought this modix looks incredible. So 15 days ago I sold My TVIX M3000-U and I bought the modix. What a great great great disappointment..........
At first when I read it could support Nero digital format I thought YES!!! I'm gonna alternate my multiple audio tracks and my multiple subtitle. But that was just an illusion. Yes it reads my nero digital movies but can't alternate subtitle and can't hide them. The only thing I can do is alternating audio tracks.
The worse is DIVX6. It alternates nothing (no audio tracks no subtitle)

So I said "don't worry I'm going to use .idx and .sub subtitle. That was an illusion too.... When I play one avi file with .idx and .sub file the modix crashes....

The only thing it can do is reading .srt subtitle (the same format my TVIX was able to read). But that's not interesting because it is a text subtitle format and not a bitmap subtitle format. So it needs long manually conversion with subrip.

So I'm really really really upset with this dirty modix and if I had knew.....

To be clear : For these tests I used fat 32 and NTFS partition. I convert Zone1 NTSC and Zone2 Pal DVD.
Will Modix ameliorate firmware for all these bugs ???? Where and who can I warn and requesting for improving firmware update ? Thank you

You can turn off subtitles by toggling the subtitle font button (eg, font small, font large, no display).

I posted on their message board about .sub subtitle files not allowing me to toggle between languages. I was told to press the 'Language' button on the remote, but that didn't work. I reported this failure and haven't yet received a response. I expect Support to chime in on this within a day or so. This appears to be a bug in their firmware.

I haven't had a bug crash with .sub files.

Please share your experience on modix's official support forums:
    http://divxtech.com/forum/
during several bug report posts the forum mods said they would forward the reports to their devs

  24. Hi
I've already tried to turn off subtitles by toggling the subtitle font button (eg, font small, font large, no display). But for nero digital, it doesn't work. They looks like being incrusted on the video.

You say that you have no problems with .idx and .sub subtitles. Which zone for DVD ? And which partition FAT or NTFS ? With my TVIX it worked only on NTSC Zone 1. With modix I'm sure it's the same. But in my last test it crashed for both zones.
    Thank you

    jackyromelot,

there seems to be a new European version of a firmware (in beta) out for the HD-3520 in the DTS Infocom web site. Maybe this will fix your problems.

I'm going to wait until divxtech.com posts a full release on their web site.

There is a new firmware at www.divxtech.com for hd3520.

    New version is V.6.05.19.

    I'll give my impression later.
