    Well, for starters, there's the KeepVid website (http://keepvid.com/ ). It's fairly straightforward, and for many videos, will give you the option to download the higher-quality MP4 version of the video in addition to the FLV version.

    There are a number of other options in software as well, of course, but KeepVid might be a good starting point.

    Youtube is hardly what you'd call "high quality".
    More like "acceptable for a small window in a web browser" quality.

    If you want to downlaod the high quality version of YouTube videos, all you need to do is locate the page source and add the video ID for the high quality version.

    Example:
    http://youtube.com/get_video?fs=1&BASE_YT_URL=http%3A%2F%2Fie.youtube.com%2F&vq=None&s...GDNaKYc&title=
    Will get you a crappy 7MB video.
    http://youtube.com/get_video?fs=1&BASE_YT_URL=http%3A%2F%2Fie.youtube.com%2F&vq=None&s...GDNaKYc&title=
    Will get you a 15MB H.264 with 508kbps video and 122kbps audio.

    I can explain in more detail if you are still interested.

    Just go to Keepvid.com and plug in the URL of the video in which you're interested. As Ai Haibara has already said. If there are 2 versions of it you'll be offered both the crummy FLV and the better quality MP4 to download.

    If this "option" shows up on every video in keepvid...then it is bullsh!t.
    Many of the videos I've uploaded were crappy 7MB .FLV videos in the first place.

  8. Yes, you're right, hech54. I also have seen many YouTube videos where the MP4 version was as bad as the FLV. I was assuming that the source files were of higher resolution and quality than either of the formats to which YouTube reencodes. If so, then you get a nice bump in quality with the MP4 version as compared to the FLV.

    Go to the page for the video you want then right click on the blank and select 'view page source' you will see this:

    watch_fullscreen?fs=1&vq=2&video_id=G1loE4ioBSo&l=445&sk=T7LmZz7pPI8FamMCfLfhUeka_X_LsxtmU&fmt_ma p=18%2F512000%2F9%2F0%2F115&t=OEgsToPDskL_88Xje5HP DrK1PIETXbMC&hl=en&plid=AARaOFnf7QCyVMNCAAACoAAYAA A&title=【唄:初音ミク】Far away 【3DPV】';
    var watchGamUrl = null;
    var watchDCUrl = null;
    var watchTrackWithHitbox = false;
    var watchIsPlayingAll = false;
    var watchUsername = 'pKjd3';
    var pageVideoId = 'G1loE4ioBSo';

    Use ctrl + f to find "watch_fullscreen" more easily. In bold is the video ID, if you want to download the HQ flv, replace with G1loE4ioBSo&fmt=6
    if you want the HQ H.264 replace with G1loE4ioBSo&fmt=18
    now copy from fs all the way to title=
    Go to the address bar and enter http://youtube.com/get_video?
    Paste to the end then click enter, the video will begin to download
    See my post above for an EXAMPLE of what the address should look like

    Keepvid does not let you download the HQ .FLV and for some videos the HQ FLV look much better then the MP4 version
    locating the page source is alot more convinient for me too :P

    Yes, that's true now, although it wasn't always true.

    I, for one, don't find that to be true at all. They've always looked pretty much the same to me, but the MP4 is significantly smaller and has stereo audio (if stereo was uploaded).

    Now lacywest has 2 ways to get them, and he can decide for himself which method he prefers.

    Actually, you don't have to do anything other than add the &fmt=18 tag, hit enter/go and let the video play. Once it's loaded it's already in your computer cache. The simplest way to access it I've found is the freeware app VideoCacheView. Download it and its use should be fairly self-explanatory.

    Why would needlessly downloading wares be the simplest way when you can just simply view the page source?
    And besides, FLV is only marked read exclusive in the cache for Windows Vista

    Even better, just look hear:

    C:\Documents and Settings\*User*\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*default\Cache
    or
    C:\Documents and Settings\*User*\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

    Google Chrome doesn't cache the flash video, but rely on Flash Player plugin that automatically caches the flash video in Windows temp folder of user account, with file name appears in flaxxxx.tmp pattern (where xxxx is alpha-numeric). Making it twice as efficient as IE7 or Firefox.

    Dunno, about this characterization as "Wares" - it just appears to be freeware, but the question was how to rip - i.e. retrieve and store the video.

    I've encountered videos that weren't that easy to find. I've found some videos that for some reason aren't cached in these places. Also I've encountered videos that won't let you directly copy them elsewhere. Gives a message of "can't be copied, in use by another application" or something to that effect and then once you close the app, the file disappears. I particularly encounter this with Imeem videos which seem to use the flaxx.tmp scheme. However, using VideoCacheView, I find the files can be copied and pasted elsewhere.

    Another useful aspect of VideoCacheView is that it ONLY shows you video files and certain pertinent info that's easily readable - such as when it was downloaded, which is useful if you're looking for something you just watched and distinguishing it from other videos.

    The only thing is, some of the functions don't seem to work such as the option to delete all files.

    Just add fmt=18 or 6 in internet explorer and view the cache after the video loaded. If you arrange by size it usually shows up on the bottom. Very easy.

    There are examples where fmt=18 looks better than fmt=6 and vice versa. You have to actually watch them.

    Thanks for your response,do you mean in this way http://youtube.com/get_video?+video id instead of any id paste G1loE4ioBSo&fmt=18 to start download?

    For every song/video id is diffrent,do i have to use above id everytime to download the song/video? If i'm wrong more info would be appreciated.what exactly is cache? thanks and sorry for stupidity.
