Using the latest vb6rocod firmware (much appreciated) is it possible to shuffle mp3 files in a folder for playback using an external HD? How can it be done using the remote please.
Many Thanks -
Hi My dvd player is philips dvp 5990k_55 is there any new update? for subtitles color

Any of the vb6rocod modded Philips firmware work with the 3962/37?
Checking the Philips web site I found that their firmware for the 3962/37 works for all of the below listed players....
DVP3962/37
DVP3982/37
DVP3980/75
DVP3980K/98
DVP3980K/55
DVP3986/94
http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpcontent.pl?scy=US& ... ur_aen.pdf
So now my question is, will vb6rocod's DVP3980K/55 or even the DVP3980/75 modded firmware work with the DVP3962/37? And if so, would I change the file name from DVP3980K_55.bin to DVP3962_37.bin in order for it to work? -

Before update get VOD code, if you need this, I replace this menu with "DVD Quick play".

Happy New Year vb6rocod! -
Can anyone be so kind as to tell me how to display the cover art while playing MP3s from a HD?
I am using the latest VB6rocod firmware.
I have tried numerous tag editors that display correctly on the computer. -
I upgraded my firmware with this one:
DVP5990_37_vb6_v2_3_2.rar (and for West Europe - CP 1252)
Thank you vb6rocod for all your work. I really appreciate it
Everything works except there is one minor thing.
File browser does not recognize file if it has non english characters in its name. For example if it has a character " i without a dot", file does not appear at all. To clarify my comment, I am not saying it does not display correctly, it does not display at all. I renamed the file, it worked. But sometimes if it is on Disc , it might be a problem.
I tried the earlier version 1.2, same problem there. Philips original version recognize the file, does display file though modifying those characters.
It is minor but I just wanted to report just in case anybody else encounters this.
Once again thx vb6rocod for your efforts. -

When I rename it , it appears. In original Philips firmware the file exists, name displayed differently but it plays with no problem. I used the same file on USB flash drive. With original philips firmware: it appeared and with updated firmware: it says empty, no file . If it further helps the character causing the problem , I believe from Turkish alphabet.
Once again it is only a minor issue and appreciate your response if it does not create too much trouble. -
Folks, I'm newbie to this kinda stuff but I'm very intrigued by the modifications available here (thanks a bunch vb6rocod)
I just picked up my DVP5992 at my local Costco in Seattle, WA. When I checked the firmware version, it says DVP5990_37.bin.
Where can I apply the latest firmware update that is compatible with the above version? Sorry if this were an obvious question, read my intro (that I'm a newbie)

- First, one of the comment 'Tipper' made on Aug 25th, namely
"If you have a North American version 5990/37 there's no patching needed. ".
I'm unclear whether this means I shouldn't try vb6rocod's update or not.
- Second, I'm bit confused about the link to the latest version, amidst all the version history...
- Also, is there anything I need to save before updating the firmware, in case if I should revert back (incidently, would I just do that by getting the latest version of off Philips site?)
Thanks for your help -
No clue what Tripper meant by his post. The latest firmware versions from vb6rocod work with your player. You have two choices...one if you use Vobsub subtitles (sub/idx) and another if you use srt type subtitles. SRT subtitles are easy to find on the net so that's what I used.
1252 is the CP for America and West European. Here is the link to vb6rocod's site which has all his available firmware and upgrade directions.
http://vb6rocod.blogspot.com/2008/12/philips-dvp599037.html
Here is the link for your language (1252) with the patch for SRT type subtitles.

Now there are two bin files in that rar file download, one with a volume control patch and one without. The volume control patch will enable your dvd player remote to control the volume on the player but you will lose your repeat and replay A+B abilities. If you have a Philips TV this patch isn't necessary because the dvd remote volume and channel functions work.
I didn't want to lose the repeat and A+B so I use my TV remote to control the volume.
The only thing you need to save before you install this firmware is the DivX VOD code which is listed in the preferences on your original Philips firmware. This code is used to register your player for DivX video on demand movies. With vb6rocod's firmware, the code won't be visible in the player set up screen.
If you want to revert back to your original firmware you simply download the current version from the Philips site and reinstall it using the same directions from vb6rocod's web site.
Just be careful and follow all the burning and upgrade installation steps exactly.
Good luck.
Edit: One more thing I forgot to mention is to check your current Philips firmware version to make sure you don't need to update that first. The current version is V31, and depending on how long your player was on the store shelf, it might not have the current version available installed.
1. POWER ON the DVD player
2. Press SETUP key to enter SETUP menu
3. Press < or > to navigate to GENERAL menu
4. Press keys 1,3,7,9 successively
5. Check the software version of the player by looking at the last 2 digits Example: Version xx.xx.xx.27
http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpcontent.pl?scy=US&slg=AEN&mid=Link_Softwar...37_fur_aen.pdf -
Thanks a bunch. This is very helpful
. I'll try it out today and summarize my experience.

Thanks so much vb6rocod, this is much nicer!
One question, why is there a difference in filename length between files via USB (only 25) and files on a disc? Is there some technical limitation? Thanks again! -

Thank you vb6rocod, Tripper and philips599037 for your help.
- I had v27 and when I loaded the flash drive with v31 from Philips, it looked like it went through 2 upgrade cycles. First time, as soon as I popped the drive, it went to "upgrading" without waiting for any prompt. Then it popped the tray out, (I think I manually closed the tray), rebooted and displayed a "press play to update" prompt. After doing so, it copied the bin file and then opened the tray, again. As noted above, I waited for the flash drive to stop blinking and then removed it. It then closed the tray and rebooted.
When it came back, I inserted the flash drive with vb6rocod's mod firmware. This was a fairly straight forward process by now
Overall, it took about 5mins, each cycle taking about 2mins. I had my laptop open with philips599037's excellent instructions and consulted it at regular interval to make sure I don't do anything stupid. So for me it took about 15mins total...
I like the new skin and file browser a lot. I'm sure I'll come to appreciate the full impact of the update over the coming week or so but this looks neat!
Btw, small feature request (or usability question), currently I don't see a way to play-all/random MP3 songs from multiple folders. This is a handy utility that I almost took for granted but after reading the manual multiple times, it doesn't seem possible with this unit - at least not to me. If so, what a shame
Is it possible to add this feature to your next firmware update, assuming it is possible?... -

The only reason my FAQ suggests updating the official firmware first, is so people wouldn't blame his mod in case they botch the flashing process.

Many thanks to vb6rocod. I've applied the mod DVP5990K_75.bin, dated December 21st, 2008. Since the box is used mostly for avi playback, the expanded filename display is very much appreciated indeed..!!
Is there a "release" of this version with volume control via the remote enabled? I'd be interested in giving this a try - although my remote control, RC-5220, does only have the one repeat button.
Cheers from New Zealand -

About volume. In "K" version you have "Karaoke" key. I'm not sure, but this key do not activate volume control?
And a question. In setup in "OSD Language", what language do you have? -

Unfortunately I have few disks which I am not able to rename easily and with this firmware player does not recognize existence of the files.
In summary, this is a great firmware, and includes very useful improvement of over the original firmware such as longer file names and especialy go to function in avi file.
I give my thanks to vb6rocod and appreciate all the efforts that he put into this and recommend it to everybody.. -
Hello again!
I've now applied the mod DVP5990K_75.bin, dated December 25th, 2008.
I've tried the karaoke key, but it doesn't affect the audio levels. There are actually vol +/- keys on this remote but they are only for control of an EasyLinked TV, presumably via an HDMI cable, which I don't yet have, but which I intend to buy today or tomorrow.
Now answering your question, in setup in "OSD Language" I've selected English, rather than "Auto (ENG)".
I note that you've removed some of the subtitling options in this release ..... still good though.
Thanks for your time & efforts with these mods. Undoubtedly improving on the stock version.
By the way ... have you ever released anything for a DVP3252K/75? It's another Philips avi-via-usb player I have here, which off course still suffers from the short file name display "feature".
All the best, vb6rocod, from the warmer climes of NZ!!! -

As before, unplugging it and plugging it back in resolved the issue.
One minor request, if you are working on your update again.. could you load the Philips logo artwork screen into a 2d image editing program, and turn it's brightness now a bit? After the logo is on our screen for a while here, it leaves a bit of a ghost images, and I'm concerned about burn in.
I can always use the tv's white screen to clear up the ghosting, but if the phiips logo was less bright, the ghosting wouldn't be as bad.
Happy new year, and again thanks much for this updated firmware!Gary Tabar Jr. -
