  1. I'm trying to convert a realmedia file to xvid using mencoder but the audio drifts to the point that there is a bad delay. Is there a way to fix this? Here's my command:

    mencoder -ovc xvid -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr -xvidencopts bitrate=800 -o test.avi input.rm

This happens often with rm files. They usually can't be fixed.

I loath rm. It doesn't convert to anything without losing audio sync. I've tried lots of tools.

And there is some great stuff out on the net in rm format - including the Kennedy Center's Millenium concerts. DRM by technical incompetance.

And how do you grab the Kennedy Center stream?
    I might want to try.

The only time I needed to convert a .rmvb to a .divx,
I used Avisynth and VirtualDub. Worked for me.

Use AviSynth with 'fps=...' and 'convertFPS=true' options in DirectShowSource for proper handling video stream, otherwise in case of VFR nothing will help you to repair video/audio synch (even if you find sync points in the beginning and in the end and adjust audio length). You might still need adjusting delay in the beginning after encoding.
Unlikely you can do something like that with other tools.

I use flashget. Sometimes have to capture then open a ram file.

Flashget is a wonderful free tool. Also can serve as a bittorent client.

Will run 6 simultaneous download streams from a site which supports download resume.
