mpg to dvd keep file size

whats the best way to convert mpg to dvd for stand alone players while keeping the same file size? I am looking for a no conversion method if there is one. I am new to this and not sure which software is the best to use. Read alot about tmpgenc 3 and an unofficial loader or plugin that lets you load the file without using dvd patcher. Does that work? I couldnt find a plugin or loader for it, and I dont have tmpgenc yet, Im on dialup. PLanning a trip to the kds house and will have dsl there, so I am compiling a list of stuff. Thanks for the help.

Size is derived from the running time and the bitrate.

First thing to check is if the mpg is DVD compliant. Open it in g-spot, and compare the resolution and framerates to those found in What is DVD (top left corner)

If it is compliant then all you need to do is author and burn. TDA can do this, as can many other tools including GUIForDVDAuthor (free).

If it is not compliant you can try the patch method, however it does not make the file compliant, and the results can still be unpredictable. The best option is to re-encode to make it compliant. Using the same bitrate as the original will give you the same file size.

I do not know about TMPGEnc3 but version 4 works well to produce DVD compliant file from Mpeg. You can choose bitrate to get max quality for DVD5 or DVD9. Than you need DVD authoring program to make and burn DVD.
See suggestion from guns1inger for that, also if you own NERO or ROXIO it will author DVD.

Don't know about Roxio, but Nero has a tendency to reencode your source, compliant or not, so I'd advice against it.

I know there is a lots of talk about NERO. I had some issues with it myself, but to make DVD5 with it does not seem to affect quality once your original file is about 4.3 GB. I do not use it for DVD9.

i want small or same filesize.+ minimal encode time I used tmpgenc to author and burn a 30 min episode from dvb and it took 1 hr 14 min to encode + burn time. I need to do it in 30 min or less + burn time. Otherwise, ma as well buy it when the series comes out and use dvdshrink.

I want to encode and author a 30 min episode in 30 min or less + keep filesize. I tried tmpgenc and it took an hour 14 min. Filesize was close to the orig b/c i set the bitrate the same. PLays fine, but at this rate I ma as well wait for series to come out on dvd then use dvdshrink. At least its fast. I know its different but my recorded format is dvd compliant except for video size=544x480 or something.(dvb recording) I just want to put them on disk w/simple menu.

Did you do what guns1inger suggested ? did you check or do you know if this mpg file you have is even dvd compliant ??

If it's taking 1 hr 14 min to author a 30min clip then either you are making some elaborate motion menu's or your mpg is not dvd compliant in some way and TDA is re-encoding it, or it is set to change/convert the audio, ect ect, which leads back to guns1inger's suggestion 8)

Ah - Then you have to reencode, something that will take time.
What kind of DVD player do you have? If it plays data disks, it may well play the mpg files as they are, if you simply write them as data files to CD-R or DVD-R.
You wont get a menu (beyond what your player offers for data disks) but it's the fastest way (if it works) to get a playable disk.

thanks for all of the advice...I can take the criticizm and the laughs...thats why I am a newbie to encoding, I just got this equipment and am learning how to use it. New to this site and didnt see my replies posted, got to hit refresh here, not used that...sorry for the double post, got the site figured out now. The only thing that didnt match on the compliant list was my resolution. I am trying to get dvd patcher to work for that part. I already know Im a dumbass about this topic, thats why Im here looking for help. I thought someone who has been doing it for awhile might know just what to do and whats best to use to take a file recorded from a dvb-s card and turn it into a dvd without me having to spend 2 months tring every way it could be done myself. Just not finding the info Im looking for or getting the results I would like. Make a few more jokes if it comes with some useful info.

Using DVD Patcher may fool the authoring app into accepting your captures as valid sources - but how your player will treat them (and play them) is another story. I've only seen this tried with SVCD specs mpg files, not to non standars resolutions like yours. But it's worth a try, I guess, if a data disk doesn't work for you.
