Hello I have used this camcorder for many tape dubs. I recently got some new tapes in and I'm having issues getting anything to appear. The camera doesn't seem to be tracking the tapes correctly. The top half will be moving static, while the bottom is just black. What is interesting to me is all the tapes do the exact thing, with the same exact pattern. Is this a case of the tapes were recorded with a camera out of alignment? Is it a lp sp problem? Any thoughts or ideas would help tremendously. Thank you!

Here are to images of the tapes. I see the one is a hi-8 which could cause issues. But the other one from what I can tell is a video 8, am I correct?

That would be the most simple/logic explanation.
You can record D8 on regular Video8 tape but it was not recommended.

A digital signal can be recorded on Hi8 and regular 8. So the physical tape is not necessarily an
indicator of the signal that was recorded. From duckduckgo:

can a digital8 recording be made on a hi8 or regular 8 tape?

Yes, a Digital8 recording can be made on a Hi8 or regular 8 tape, but it will yield less recording time compared to
using a Digital8 tape. For example, a 120-minute Hi8 tape will provide only 60 minutes of Digital8 recording capacity.

Thank you all so much for this information. I'm going to talk to the guy who gave me these tapes and see if they were recorded digital 8. I never knew that a person could use video 8, or hi 8 on a digital 8 setup. It appears I may need to purchase a digital 8 camcorder.
