illegal audio format

please help me-i have converted a few avi's to dvd using dvd2vcd,tmpengc,dvd author-just tried another avi,when i tried to manually author dvd,the video was fine,but the audio gave an error message
illegal audio format:
for a standard dvd you can only use the followinf audio formats:
dolby digital ac-3
mpeg -1 audio layer 2
or linear pcm
i only have encoded audio in an mpa . wav form,and mpeg -1 audio layer 3 (i think)
i have not had this problem before-not sure if it is codecs (i have uninstalled them,and re-installed them)
or is it the source this time?
or have my settings changed on tempengc or dvd author???

What is your sampling rate?

It should be 48,000 Hz
