Quicktime seems to be the slowest, mplayer has sync issues on my old 400mhz computer, vlc is the best I have tried but it still drops frames. Is anything faster?

I think any other player you'll find will be based on QuickTime. Cellulo is one, has nice features but probably not any faster than QTPlayer.
