  1. My last post was not phrased very well.

Is there a simple guide or instructions here somewhere here to explain how to do this?

sorry for the repost, just thought it needed clarification.

    Hope someone can help.

It is possible to play MPEG-4 on the Philips DVP-642. I believe it is the only DVD player Philips makes that will play this. A woman (a real rarity in this field) used to have a webpage that told how to make Nero Recode stuff work on the DVP-642, but I can no longer find it. I can tell you that AAC audio, the apparent default for MP4 encodes, will NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER work on this player. NEVER. Please do not post here later asking why your AAC audio won't play. If you must encode to MP4, use the lowest profile possible. Use MP3 audio for best results (the DVP-642 definitely has a problem with DTS and AC3 audio playback if the encoded file has a high video bit rate. "High" would be 2000 Kbps and you might even have problems with anything above 1400 Kbps and AC3 or DTS audio.). That's the best I can do. You should probably burn to re-writable discs until you find out what works for you. The DVP-642 does understand the MP4 container. The Divx playback chip it uses is old and one of the poorest on the market, but it does have a quirk of actually understanding the MP4 container. That's the only good thing about it.

I believe this is a copy of the page your were referring to at the top of your post : http://www.jarnot.com/twiki/bin/view/Public/DVP642LisaBsAVIGuide
There must be more floating around somewhere, as this is more of a troubleshooter for Xvid avi files. In fact, LisaB is a member here (although she hasn't posted in six months or so. If you search back through here old posts you will find the information you are after.
