Where I live there are people from all over the world, all living on a compact campus. You'd expect there to be some trouble, especially on Friday/Saturday nights when everyone crams into the bars and get a good few drinks down them.
Racism is non-existant. In my house alone (house of 13 people), we have people from these nations:
- UK
- Japan
- China (both Hong Kong and mainland)
- Greece
- Singapore
- Malasia
- United Arab Emirates
- Norway
You either get along, or you don't and sacrifice your social life. Plus, everyone else would think you're a twat.

That's good to know. Now, if everyone could just do that well with each other
Why do you suppose that is, Cobra? Do you think it's because everyone is there for a purpose? -

I live in the country which is alllll white. people literally stop and watch if they see a brown person, it's quite weird. there's also a lot of racist feelings around here - close friends and family harbour prejudice. it was an eye opener for me, last job i did, i was sat at a desk with a mixed race guy and he was cool - he used to be a self described mother ****** but is now chilled out. we used to have some interesting discussions on race and it's a curious topic. as a basic instinct we fear that which is different from ourselves - it keeps us alive and healthy. but people can't admit to that, and so the nation goes into a perverse positive discrimination which simply allows those with suppressed feelings to lash out.
Black history month, what is that? there's a local society, called wacka - it's for black people only, white people can't join. and i used to run a comedy club, the local town council TOLD us we needed to run a "black" comedy night which happened every three months. i was embarassed to be associated with it, it was a guy slagging off white people for two hours - disgusting. but we were required to show it in the spirit of cultural diversity.
along with having to show indian films which never sold well, losing us money - it was damn stupid. -
What do you mean by this? I'm a bit thick because of genetic engineering revision!Originally Posted by Capmaster
I don't think you and I will ever understand racists. I think it may be because they aren't intelligent enough to pick out faults in someone they don't like, and so have to fall back on stereotypes related to someone's features. Maybe they were brought up that way, and are too ignorant or stubborn to see otherwise (difficult though it may be).

Just read your post flan - that's ridiculous.
I agree on the "positive discrimination" too - it's stupid to try to reverse something in the name of political correctness.
We are all Homo sapiens. The sooner people realise this, the better.

I'm loading up on the wine coolers, so you might see some interesting posts in the next few days. After all, I've been informed that the back of the house is to be 'sponge painted' in the colors of antique purple and pearl white...
Real men don't sponge paint. Sober, anyway.

Not that you asked me...but I'll yield my 2 cents.Originally Posted by Capmaster

I think it is created (in today's society) because some people need to put things in a good vs bad order. I may be wrong on this but for month following the Oklahoma city bombing or 9-11, I did not hear any racially driven or general racial issues in the news. Do you suppose anyone in the towers cared what color the man or woman was who was trying to help them? In the face of severe adversity perspectives and priorities change mighty fast.
Bottom line is that man over there is just trying to feed his family just like I am, he's trying to make a better life for them, just like I am. The color of his skin does not change that.
You know on a side note, it is very odd to be in a fight against white people over a racial issue. One of my best friends is black and a situation cropped up once because of someone calling him a racial slur. What I found odd about it, was he was fighting because of what was said, they were fighting because he was black, but my other 2 friends and I were fighting just to back our friend up...I just found that to be an odd feeling. -
My mum recently did the downstairs toilet in terracotta-coloured paint, but she mixed sand with the paint. It gave it a dead interesting look and texture.
That was random.

but playing devils advocate for a moment, what if we were homo-sapiens, japanese and asians were homo-prosapiens, and africans were homo-subsapiens. would your opinion change then? would it be ok for you to get paid more than an african person but less than a japanese person, based on differences of brain sizes between the different ethnicities?

No matter what someone's intellect is, they still have the right to equality.

Well, you have a choice of vinyl, clowns, vinyl AND clowns or bestality.
-
Except our society doesn't work like that - if you're mentally handicapped (or have special needs, or have learning difficulties - whatever is the PC term these days. basically, someone who's retarded) then you're not treated equally. you get preferential treatment and additional assistance. don't people with above average intelligence deserve the same kind of support?Originally Posted by Cobra

But what color are the clowns and vinyl? -
The world isn't perfect, and it probably never will be. It's not fair, but that's life.
Anyway, I've made my "view" heard so I'll shut up on this racism thing now.
What colour are they? Red and white, but that'd be yellow and white to SatStorm with his cool new glasses!

I mean that everyone at your school is there voluntarily and has spent money to attend. They are pursuing a degree (and maybe some wild frat parties) and that is their highest priority. Jeopardizing it by causing trouble with students of other racial groups would be unacceptable.Originally Posted by Cobra

I think it's probably a mix of both. -
I don't see it as right to be treated equally, more of a right to be able to exist as an equal to the person next to you. People who are, for the sake of argument, confined to a wheel chair can't walk like me and therefore can't get upstairs so they need a little assistance which comes in the way of lifts, ramps etc. If it makes their life a little easier and doesn't impact on me to much I'm all for it.Originally Posted by flaninacupboard
People of above average intelligence shouldn't need assistance in the same way a phsically or mentally handicapped person does.

But would in the same vain do they not deserve it? aren't everyday tasks like earning money and doing the laundry below them? imagine how much more they could achieve if someone else cooked them dinner.Originally Posted by VCDHunter

That did pique my interest, as it always does, but this is a fascinating subject - hearing everyone's take on racial issues, discrimination and the like.Originally Posted by northcat_8

I watched 'Euro Trip' this weekend.
I had a very hard time with a particular scene in the movie. Watching the young boy prance around like Adolf Hitler, moustache and all, wasn't particularly funny to me. The fact that he was being portrayed as the German son of a German father made it even more disgusting. My wife told me people laughed hysterically at that scene in the theaters.
I've heard they don't teach that part of German history in Germany anymore. It's something I strongly disagree with. When one cannot learn from his ancestors' mistakes, one is doomed to repeat those mistakes. -
I don't get the comparison - I was maintaining that people less fortunate than the status quo require assistance to be able to function with dignity and efficency. You're statement infers that the more capable the person the more assistance they should be given.Originally Posted by flaninacupboard

Being partly from German stock I'm not particularly proud of that association that Germans have been given because of the acts of a ruthless and insane man. I study the holocaust and the sick movements by the likes of Frank Collins, and I get almost physically ill. I'm sure most Germans feel the same way, but Germany is not helping itself by burying its head in the sand either.
We're taught about slavery in this country and it's not sugar-coated at all. We made mistakes as a country, and we corrected them. Same with Germany. They have almost zero tolerance for anything nazi-related, be it swastikas, clubs, skinheads, etc. But that is and always will be part of their history and they need to address it in the schools.
