Ok.. i am attempting to add subtitles to an .avi movie file with virtual dub.
I have succesfully done this many times with virtual dub..
so i know what i'm doing, but im havign a peculiar problem
When i watch the movie with windows media, its fine, and i can fast foward it, do wahtever, etc..
but when i load the clip into v-dub... it wont play past the first "frame"
if i fast foward it (move the time line) or just play it with v-dub.. it wont work, the sound works but not the following frames do not show
When i try converting and adding the subtitles, the same thing... the "saved" (mixed-down/converted w/titles) .avi file will not show past the first frame, as if it didnt even recognize the video side of the avi file.
I have tried v-dub mod and v-dub mpeg2.. and still.. it loads the file and plays the audipo fine.. but no video..
anyone have any ideas?
thanks

Have you tried doing this with AviSynth instead?
That is how I do it
Also you might want to try trimming the first frame or two of the video and see what happens although who knows if that might throw off your A/V sync.

oh.. i used G-spot if this helps anybody:
Video:
4cc: DX50/divx
name: DivX 5.0
bitrate: 1373 kb/s
fps: 23.976
qf: 0.193 bits/pixel
video src type: 4cc: DX50
audio src: MPEGLAYER3 (MP3) (0x0055)
Video path: S) --> AVI Splitter --> ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder --> (R)
Audio Path:
S) --> AVI Splitter --> MPEG Layer-3 Decoder --> Morgan Stream Switcher --> (R) -
It will happen if video is set to direct stream copy in virtualdub-don't know of any other possible reason.

Well it could be BAD FRAMES which could be anywhere such as frame number one hence my idea of cutting out the first frame or two.Originally Posted by mgh

well.. i tried deleteing the first frames.. but still.. nothing..
i scanned for bad frames.. none were found..
this is baffling to me.. i have never seen this happen before..
it sucks cuz ffdshow doesnt work either, i dont know how to use avi synth, seems too complicated
anyone else have any ideas as to why this is happening?
i can watch the movie FINE on windows media.. but these editing progs wont get past the first frame, if i move it foward, then hit stop.. it gets stuck on the frame i moved it to, so thats odd aswell
hmm
thanks for any help

I have seen exactly the same problem with VirtualDUB on some DivX AVIs on one of the computers I use. Fortunatelly it's not my video editing machine.
I also can playback the AVIs with Media player.
Additionally, I can process the AVIs with VirtualDUB. That is, I can "Save as AVI" them to another file, using a different codec or applying filters. I just can't see them with playback. Also, I can see them frame by frame clicking on the frame advance buttons.
On my other machines, I have no problem with these AVIs.
The only thing about the machine that has problems is that I am "careless" with what codecs I install. My suspicion is that it's a codec combination issue here.
Try saving the AVI using full processing mode options using a different video codec (i.e. xVid). It will most likely bypass the problem you have. The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know. -
Sometime the avi will have a few bad frames that will screw up the audio and the way i fix it is save the file in vitual dub in direct stream for video and full processing for audio and then i scan the saved avi for the spot where the audio changes and thats where you can find the bad frames.I then add a few seconds of audio with goldwave at that point to match the sync.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
hmm..
i appreicate all those suggestions, but unfortuantley nothing worked
i cant "save as" avi in full proccesing mode
i can make a streaming copy, but if i try using another codec/etc... it only shows the first frame of where ever i started (even if i take a small section out of the miuddlke of the film)
this is goddamn maddening, espeically since this film is very rare and i want the subtitles on it damnnit!!
oh well..
thanks for everything

try first playing the film . then stop it and drag the bar to where u want. if the film is still playing and u try to fast forward it wont - i had the same prob. first stop it and then drag the bar forward or backward
