Firstly Hi All, new on here so forgive me if i sound like a noob.

I,ve being trying to hardcode subtitles to a avi video using virtual dub, i have virtual dub installed with the subtitler plug in and converter installed.

I save to avi using the codec which i added "xvid meg-4 codec"
it all completes looking like the subtitles are in the right place but the file size of the avi is now 126gb as oppose to 1.24gb.
I know you can setting to change the outfile size but don't what to put.

I want the output size to be no bigger than 2.5gb but not less than the orignal and try to keep near enough the same quality.
this is the first time i have used this software so please excuse me if i'm hard to follow.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

If it's 126 gb it sounds that it doesn't use any compression at all.

In virtualdub be sure to select video->full processing, under video->compression select xvid mpeg4, select configuration and you can adjust quality settings or set the bitrate manually. If that wont help you could try use the divx codec.

Under audio choose direct stream copy.

    thanks baldrick,

i've had a mess about with the configuration and when its starts the box which gives the estimated target size is either going way high or low, can't seem to get where i want it.
whats the difference with the divx codec?

    cheers

I have managed to get the it done at 1.5gb with the subtitles all correct now but when i watch it on my 37" lcd the scenes which there is fast movement there is heavy pixelation and its blurry, you can't really notice it on my 17" pc monitor only on the lcd you can.
is there any filters which can remove which or make a little better.

When using XviD or DivX, I use Target Quantizer of 2 or unconstrained, 1 pass quality based fixed quantizer of 2 or 3.

The pixelation that you refer to is caused by the MPEG 4 part 2 compression. No matter how high the bitrate, this pixelation will still occur in dark areas on a large screen LCD.

To avoid this, you could try compressing with the x264 codec which is MPEG 4 part 10.

You can either encode with the x264 VFW enoder and use mkvmerge to put in mkv container or use Virtualdub 1.9.X-test27 with external encoder feature to create 264/aac mkv or mp4.

Here is a thread on using the external encoder if you're interested...

    and Virtualdub 1.9.X-test27
