  1. I converted an high resolution AVI (640 x 480, 40 min about 700MB) file into MPEG2 using Mainconcept Encoder. Then took the video stream and compressed 15% out of the original file size (about 1.6GB) via Rejig.

The MPEG2 did not show any blocks on my computer. But when I burnt it to a DVD-R and viewed it on my standalone player, I got many tiny square blocks for motion scenes.

Since the MPEG2 looked good on my computer, I have deleted everything so it is not possible to repeat any tests. I just wonder whether it was the MC Encoder or Rejig that are the cultpit for the poor quality?

    Does anyone has similar experience?

  2. Why are you using rejig at all? You will definitely get better results if you simply encode 15% smaller with Mainconcept.

  3. I use Rejig because from my experience with DVDShrink, compressing using transcoding, particularly 10 - 15% does not affect too much about the quality. But lowering the bitrate certainly does. Maybe my logic is wrong.

Has anyone compare the 2 scenarios for the same file size:
    1) Encode with high bitrate and then Rejig
    2) Encode with lower bitrate

  4. Using DVDShrink with a 15% drop won't cause too much of a quality drop if you're using an original DVD source, but not from a source that has already been re-encoded once.

Quality will be significantly better if you just use Mainconcept and cut out the unnecessary rejig transcode.
