I just burmt my first 4x dvd -r data disc following specifications used:

    Dvd Burner: Nec ND1300
    Dvd Reader: Pioneer 116
    Media: DigiMedia 4x DVD -R
Software Used: Roxio Easy Cd Creator Classic 6.0.0.200
    Computer: AMD xp 2600+

    I burnt 6 divx video movies to 1 dvd-r at 4x.
according to roxio cd creator the dvd was burnt successfully.
but when I try to play the videos back on any of the dvd drives the files won't play back properly(ie hang and slow). The last divx movie is reported corrupted by windows media player.

What could be wrong? I assume if the dvd was written successfully it should play back with no problems. But thats no the case here. So many problems and burnt dvd not recognised properly.

  2. I don't know Digimedia, but if you use something like DVDInfo to find the true manufacturer of the disc, you might have a surprise.

I have come across a few discs in the past that barely read in the writer, even with the enhanced error correction they usually employ. They may have been burnt, but if they're very much on the cheap and nasty side, you will have problems playing them back (although usually this manifests as video discs on standalones, not just data as is the case here).

The obvious thing to try first is different media. I had an old Matsushita DVD-ROM drive that didn't like recordable media and was subsequently replaced because of that, but it is somewhat unusual to have both a reader and writer refuse to extract data off a disc.

I think you might have just been very unlucky with your choice of media.
