    hi,

i have made a divx movie, converted it from raw AVI, made by my miniDV camera, PAL, it was set to 16:9

in VirtualDub I selected under video compression > DivX 6.9.2 Codec > "custom resize" to 720:406 (so as to keep 16:9)
on my pc it plays just fine, but when I play it on my DVD player (copied to usb flash drive),
it seems like zoomed in, but not "centered" zoom, some part from the right edge is missing.

so originally if an object is in the middle, on TV it is on the right side, if not missing some part (if i was very close to it, or zoomed in when shooting it)

    the TV is "HD ready".

There are resolution settings on my TV, and even "zoom in" ... but I would need some kind of "zoom out - centered".
No matter what I select, no luck. "Auto" does not work, 16:9 either ...

So my guess is I need to change something when converting to divx ?
or it is not possible to play 16:9, 720:406 properly at all ?

    thanks

  3. Try 720x400. 406 is mod 2 (an integer multiple of 2, mod 16 is best) and many players will have problems with it.

To me this sounds like an overscan problem where not only is some of the image area covered, but it is not covered to the same amount on either side. If this is the case then there is little you can do about it. The usual overscan solution - resize down then add a black border to force the image back into the visible area - should make sure you see the entire image, however you will also get a black bar very visible up the opposing edge to where your problem currently lies. You could overcome this by putting more border up one side than the other, however this will only look good on your TV, and will look uneven on other TVs.

The take away lesson from this is not to shoot to the edge of the visible frame.

    great !
    seems that this was it.
as soon as I have created a 720x400 video, it looks fine on TV too, while the previous one ( 720x406) has the problem I have described all the time.
    thanks !!
