I think you'll find that Virtual Dub is used probably most. I use AVI_IO because I find it less buggy. But everyone has a preference.

I've used both VirtualDub and AVI_IO. Hands down, AVI_IO
is the better app. Very rarely drops frames and is
simpler to use. VirtualDub drops lots of frames (for me
anyway) and does a lot of things I don't really need; AVI_IO focuses on doing one thing extremely well: capturing multisegment video. AVI_IO is definitely worth the $25.

AVI_IO is free if your captures are less then a certain time/size. There's a 3 file limit on the trail ver. So that's 12GB (3x 4GB) of AVI (for NTFS no limit).

AVI IO hands down is better for capturing. I'm not ripping on VirtualDub, I think it's an awesome program but you have to tinker with it alot just to set up a capture. Even then it drops alot of frames and is rather touchy about the settings you use. Both are great programs.

AV_IO for me without a doubt. Virtual Dub dropped loads of frames - AV_IO performs without a hitch on highest res and lowest compression.
Thats my 2pennthworth anyhow
