  1. I burned a DVD-R using Nero with vob files created by TMPGenc Authoring and it burned well. I put it in my Pioneer DV-440 and it played the video, but no sound! When I went to the menu to select an audio track it said MPEG 2ch was the audio...which is what I had TMPGenc set it to...so I took the disc out and put it in my computer on PowerDVD and it played the sound fine...i then put it in my GO Video DVD/VHS player and sound works fine...why can my reasonably recent DVD player read this? I intend to convert VHS for friends and having compatibility issues like this is unacceptable...do I just have to leave it at PCM and take up more room?

  2. The DVD standard only supports PCM (uncompressed audio = wav) or AC3 audio. MPEG2 layer I (mp2) audio is not supported by the standard, and while the vast majority of DVD players will play it anyway some will not.

You should re-author your DVD with either PCM or AC3 audio:

All DVDs read ac3, only some read mpeg audio.

AC3 Machine (free) can encode to ac3 for you.

AC3 uses the same compression size as mpeg audio.
