I've mentioned this before awhile back about a problem I had on my Lenovo IdeaPad laptop running on Windows 11. I've had the laptop for about 4 years, but I noticed a few months ago Opera browser (and I think other browsers I was using like Chrome) started to crash and display an error message. This seems to have been occurring more with Opera, though likely because that's the browser I use most of the time. I could never rectify the problem despite people advising me to run a diagnostic, clear temp files, reinstall browser etc. The machine, for some strange reason, one day suddenly wouldn't let me log in with my passport, so I then had to use my sons identical Lenovo laptop that he doesn't use anymore. I've been using it for a few months now, but now in the last week or so I've started to notice the same problem again with it crashing in Opera, more so when I'm on youtube and when bring up a new tab it will crash and display a "crash report error.exe" message and an "Out of memory" message. I regularly clear my temp files in storage sense and temp files.
Anyone know what's causing this?.

The error message somewhat speaks for itself. Memory management is dynamic as Windows adapts and adjusts it's usage
as the conditions demand. When the RAM availability is low and demand is increasing the system will attempt
to make more RAM available by moving data in RAM that is not actively being used to the pagefile.
Tha page file lives on the SSD/HDD and is usually set to have a "system managed" rather than fixed size.
This allows it to expand if necessary as conditions call for.
For this mechanism to work properly, you must have adequate SSD/HDD space available so the pagefile can expand.
But even then, it will not alleviate all out of memory situations. The real solution is more RAM. -
Hi davenet.
I use Opera some of the time & get this error on more than one computer.
I believe it is an Opera problem.
Usually closing Opera & reopening it fixes the error until next time.
Opera was or is supposed to have it's own engine BUT it has to be partly Chrome based since it can use Chrome extensions with a little help from a Opera extension.
I now use Firefox most of the time & do not get this error on FF. -
Hi cholla here is some troubleshooting info specific to Opera

Hi davenet,
I believe i had read those posts on the Opera forum when I was tryiong to fix the error.
My Windows Task Manager never has anywhere near the memory use the pictures in the Opera forum have.
My Windows Task Manager shows the amounts in kb.
If I convert K to MB the max is about 198MB.
But I have several opera.exe's showing but only one Opera browser open & only one tab.
This does not seem to cause problems & I only get the Out of Memory occasionally when going to several pages at ebay or Amazon.
@videoAI, I plan to test the iron portable.

Probably best to evaluate it using these screens, sort by memory usage on the processes tab
and the "big picture" view using performance tab/memory. On mine you can see 3.4GB in use,
12GB available.
This includes the 10.1GB memory that is "cached" because that memory can be freed at any time,
it doesn't need to be written to disk firstLast edited by davexnet; 5th Oct 2025 at 22:17.

@ davenet,
I am using Windows 7 32-bit.
The columns in Task Manager are different.
There is not one for just "Memory".
The Performances tab is also a lot different.
To me this is a long standing Opera problem.
If you use Opera you will just have to live with it.
Maybe enough RAM would prevent the error. -

Sorry for the late reply. It could be as suggested a problem with Opera and the RAM, although I have had the same problem with Microsoft Edge and Chrome. I have since been using AVG Browser that I've never used before (never knew it was a browser until I tried it), and I haven't yet had this problem with using it. The laptop only has 4GB of RAM. I like using Opera as it has a VPN with it.

If you'd like to use Opera, seek help from them. They may have some setting or other that can mitigate or help with memory issues.
As you probably know 4GB RAM is absolute rock bottom specs for Windows 11 so these kinds of issues
will arise from time to timeLast edited by davexnet; 19th Oct 2025 at 14:12.
