I got this Philips DVDR3575H DVD Recorder for free. It has both optical drive reader and HDD and HDMI output and it can upscale analog signal to 1080p.

But I cannot tell if the unit has line TBC and how it can be enabled. I tried to pass video from VHS both through analog out and HDMI out but it doesn't seem to make any noticeable difference.

Is anyone familiar with this model or similar models from Philips?

I can provide internal pictures from the unit if you want

Annoyingly, the EU and US versions use the same model number but are completely different internally.

US DVDR3575H/37: Funai design, has line TBC (Panasonic chip from what I've read)
EU DVDR3575: Philips design, no line TBC (SAA7136 according to service manual)
My YouTube channel with little clips: vhs-decode, comparing TBC, etc.

But you know that it doesn't make any sense to upscale a video from 576 to 1080?

I know that it wont improve video quality. What isn't there wont be there even after the up-scaling. It could be handy to upload to Youtube if I follow the option to capture with HDMI to USB device without need to manually upscale it. Uploading to Youtube videos with resolution less than 1080p is a very bad idea because the compression makes a visible difference, especially at 480p.

Thank you so much. I also got a Sony DVD Recorder RDR-HX750 that I actually paid 20€ to get it. Does it have live TBC or bad luck again?

I saved a Sony DVD recorder from the recycle bin.

Optical drive fails to read CDs/DVDs but I don't really care about that.

Does this model have TBC that can be used as passthrough?

    The model is Sony RDR-GX210

RDR-GX210 doesn't have any particular horizontal stabilization / line TBC.

The 2nd digit indicates the model series or "generation". The 5-series that you have now is the earliest Sony that is worthwhile for passthrough.

You can also check manual for a particular model, if it has the proc amp options ie. white enhancer, black enhancer, chroma level etc. then it’s the same NEC chip

You can refer to this informative comment on a YouTube comparison about the DVD recorders based around this particular NEC chipset.

If anyone is looking for one of these - afaik the functionality is present in pioneers from at least the Pioneer DVR-_30 and newer models, and Sony RDR-HX_50 and newer. The Sonys with this are basically using the same chipset (from NEC) and firmware as the Pioneers just with different branding (older Sonys are completely different and don't have this functionality so check up the manual that it has a similar menu with similar image options). I do think they can be a bit rare to find in the US though.

Can confirm the results in the video from my own testing (and have a video showing similar results on a PAL tape) - very good but not quite as good stabilization as the Panasonics and a bit more prone to frame drops but much more configurable and also in case of EU/AUS models don't have issues with clipping brights. And also as noted in other comment - EU/AUS models support PAL60 and NTSC 4.43 which is useful for digitizing NTSC tapes in Europe without needing a dedicated multi-system VCR. (Both these and EU/AUS Panasonics can be switched to NTSC but Panas only support standard NTSC.)

There are also one or two Toshiba models that are based around a similar chipset At least the European RD-XS24 which I have performs very similarly though the firmware is very different, it also has a bunch of options though no option for changing system. Most Toshibas are very different made by different OEMs though so not something to rely on.
