The only relevant thread I found was 10 years ago - IM sure tech has evolved since then.

    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/369074-Is-there-a-way-to-make-PotPlayer-automatica...load-subtitles

Is there a more seamless way for potplayer to detect what video I'm playing, and retrieve the subs in the background and display once downloaded?

There's an option under Preferences > Extensions > Subtitle searching
I've never used it, so you'll have to figure it out. Your video should probably have the proper filename.

There's another option, Preferences > Subtitles > Subtitle searching. I'm not sure how this one is used.

When I need subs, I usually just download them from a website.

that option is not automatic - it just gives you a shortcut to download subs.

I just tried the Extension one, you select what you want it to do from the 2 drop down lists, and it automatically gets and loads or displays the subs.
Don't check "Show the dialog..." if you don't want that; that popup lets you select the subs you want.

May I check if this is the place you're referring to?
