I think the only difference I see are the drives. You say UHD friendly drives. I am using UHD official drives
WH16NS60 official internal drive firmware 1.00
BP60NB10 official external drive firmware 1.02MK
Some friendly drives can be converted to official drives by flashing custom firmware. Check makemkv forums.
I have sony x800 also and all these discs that plays in x800m2 plays in x800 too.
Also check the disc size in bytes. It should be lesser than 66,735,570,944 bytes (~62gb not 65gb)
Ripped using makemkv, original plays - another one is authored by tsmuxer and it plays. So, no failure if burnt in 2 layers using verbatim but ritek discs completely fail and I found that those discs are not compliant.

Agree. I don't think there will be software/hardware differences between x700 and x800 series regarding bd-xl disc reading. I have seen numerous reports on x800 customers complaining about disc glitches (original uhd discs) but unfortunately mine did'nt have. I suspect yours might be one of those with issues. You can try getting another new one and testing it and return if it didn't work.
For discs > 65gb, I am using usb drive and AVCHD trick to play. Sounds like ub450 with dolby vision plays those. I may grab one from UK before it is gone. -
Finally I grabbed a new Sony X700 like the one I used to have, and it's playing all the discs perfectly well, as it used to do my previous one. Obviously, all the discs under 66GB, like before.
-
Got the Panasonic UB450. BD-XL movies burnt to 3 layers plays but movies with only 2 layers burnt in BD-XL won't play. Even mkv with DTS-HD audio burnt to BD-XL 3 layers plays with subtitles and chapters. Mkv with truehd or atmos in BD-XL 3 layers plays but no audio. Usb mkv playback is bad and freezes.

for what it's worth, this is my starter pack into the dying exciting world of UHD physical media and personal backups:
- Verbatim Slimline External Bluray Writer #43888 (inside there is a Pioneer BDR-UD04 Official UHD drive, no need for fw flashing)
- Verbatim M-DISC BD-XL 100GB #43833 (5-pack Jewel Case Printable)
- Sony UHD Bluray Player UBP-X800M2
- MakeMKV to backup my discs + ImgBurn to burn the backup (UDF 2.60, all default settings, 2x speed for BD66, and BD50, MAX or AWS for BD25, with verification). Tried both .iso files and BDMV folders.
The Sony plays BD25, BD50 and BD66 (BD-XL burned on 2 layers only) flawlessly, but doesn't recognize BD100 at all. It throws an error after seeking like crazy and emitting weird noises. I went through the entirety of The Killing on BD-XL and there were no skips; I also rewind back the entire movie at max speed and everything went smooth.
I based my purchases also on your recent messages, indeed the X800M2 plays up to BD66 like you said, so I am happy to hear there is in fact a player that can play BD100 with HDR and Dolby Vision (another guy also reported this some time ago). This might call for a dual bluray player setup, kinda overkill, but could give me and many other some peace of mind. By the way, are you actually using both? Did you reach your perfect setup?
Fun fact: the Sony X800M2 played all the BD25 and BD50 I burned around 10 years ago and still have around, very much pleased. But my old non-UHD burner, the mythical LG GGW-H20L, didn't like any new blank media (but could burn a leftover BD50 from 10 years ago, the last one from that era).blurays are evil -
The Oppo 203 would be a better investment than two different players. No problems playing 100GB discs. Since they are only available from 3rd parties now - maybe investigate the REAVON players. I heard they are basically carbon copies of the Oppo 203 and 205. (I have not read any reports on their compatibility with burned media, however. But if they truly are clones of the Oppos- then that would be worth taking a look into).
*EDIT- The Oppo WILL play BDXL...sometimes. but it is too spotty to reccomend doing it. I have played them with no issue- and then a month later it won't load. So I cannot reccomend it.Last edited by C.C. 95; 16th Jul 2023 at 15:07.

I have heard in another thread that Reavon won't read BD-XL. Also, Cineultra (oppo clone) will also not read BD-XL as it is not the Bluray standard - per the supplier. If Oppo reads both, I guess it is the only one that is capable of dolby vision.
I only use the discs to playback Dolby vision FEL movies as only the bluray players are capable of playing FEL.
Currently this is my setup and it works with Verbatim discs and imgburn UDF 2.60 and 4x burn speed.
LG WH16NS60 official drive firmware 1.00 SATA & LG BP50NB40 (converted to BP60NB10 using firmware) external usb burner
Sony X800M2 (latest official firmware) - plays if the size is < 66gb and I have tested both usb and sata burners
Panasonic UB450 (latest firmware 1.18) - plays if size is > 66gb and only usb burner works. If I use sata burner, it won't read. Though this is bluray region B, it plays most of the region A discs too.Last edited by sam298; 26th Jan 2023 at 12:42.

I don't care having two players one for BD66 and another for BD100. Panasonic feels plastic with noisy tray but audio/video quality wise it is the same as sony x800m2. Sony can handle many formats through usb (has sacd and dvd audio too) but the panasonic plays only most lossless formats if written in discs. For BD-25 and BD-50 I have used quantum and verbatim discs and have no issues playing it in any player. Only BD-XL is finicky.

Hello!
I just received the Panasonic DP-UB450EG-K unit. I haven't been able to watch the movie yet, but I recorded a 100GB Disk to 4X USB Hitachi-LG WH16NS60 and it reads it perfectly, it's fast. Tested a disk correctly and without jumps in the layers at 4X.
My settings:
Nero Burning Rom
Hitachi-LG WH16NS60
SATA to USB adapter
Verbatim VBR520YP10SV2
4X recording speed
UDF 2.50
Greetings!Last edited by Bon Javi; 10th Feb 2023 at 09:33.

Converting BD-66 to BD-100 is easy. The total size of a bdmv folder is 59gb. I added a zip file 8gb size to CERTIFICATE/BACKUP folder making the total > 66gb and I burnt. I can read it fine with UB450. It serves as a backup for my zip file too

blurays are evil
-
jajajajajajajaja I found the zip amusing. Yes, that's what I thought, to include a file in a folder to make it larger. And now you take advantage and put a backup copy of your documents or whatever hahahahaha great!
Would this file have to go to some specific path? Well I'll try it with my BDXL 100GB RE. -
I don't think the file name matters as long as the extension is zip or something that the backup folders won't use. I have seen files with crt or bdmv extensions under BACKUP folder.
If the CERTIFICATE folder at root level doesn't have a subfolder, create BACKUP folder inside CERTIFICATE and add the zip files there.
I backed up some of my files to that zip file so I can access it using PC. I haven't tried adding multiple files but the CERTIFICATE/BACKUP folder would be the safest location. -
Hello.
I have certainly been able to create a "dead" file. You don't need a backup of your ex-girlfriend's nude photos either. You can create a dead space so that your 3 layers are 2... It's an advantage. It worked with Life imprisonment. A 63 GB movie. I put this 10GB file in the BACKUP folder of Certificate... Everything worked fine. Having the UB450 is having the power hehehe. Having a bigger penis gives you certain advantages. You can always cut it XD.
I recommend the following to create those files. If not, you can always create real zip backups, ok.
5GB file:
fsutil file createnew 5GB 5368709120
10GB file:
fsutil file createnew 10GB 10737418240
15GB file:
fsutil file createnew 15GB 16106127360
You only have to execute any of these commands on CMD, to create "dead" files that allow you to burn your 100GB discs. In my case, I don't need to be so clever, it has helped me. You choose. Bakcup vs "BDXL recording yes or yes". hehehe Enjoy!Last edited by Bon Javi; 3rd Mar 2023 at 09:52.

Hello.
Has anyone tested if the Panasonic 450 plays 128 GB Sony discs?
Thank you. -
I'm really desperate about this. I stopped buying BDXL because they are really expensive and compatibility issues. OK. I then started backing up my whole UHD collection from BDXL to BD50, even losing some quality, and burning the discs with both Verbatim and Mediarange discs. I also use two different units, one being a USB Pioneer one, and the other an internal LG unit. Every one of two discs fails on layer change. My standalone unit is a brand new Sony X700. So i don't really understand where the problem is. If using two different discs' brands and two different burners, I would say the player, but why one of two? Shouldn't it be on all of them?
I don't really know how to deal with it. It's really desperating... -
Fails layer change when burning or playing? (Did it pass verification stage?)
Make sure you buy some BD-50 RE DL discs to test before you commit to a final burn. I ALWAYS burn on Verbatim BD-RE DL to make sure everything is o.k. (Time consuming, sure- but I don't end up making coasters out of all my BD-50s).
I suggest you always use the Pioneer for any double layer stuff- I never had very good luck with LG. LG failed layer change on burning 90% of the time.
Also- you may just have a bad batch of discs. This happened to me once. Once I opened a new set of discs- everything was fine again.
BTW- did your Sony player do fine with all your other burned DL discs before this? -
They fail while playing. I never do the verification process, but I tend to transfer the data from the disc to the computer once finished.
I have found that Verbatim has a bigger rate of failures than Mediarange. Strange but true. I buy the Verbatim discs in Japan.
I have been using the Pioneer unit until yesterday, when, after having some failures playing the disc, I started using the LG unit. All in all, they tend to fail on a 50% basis.
And, finally, I used to have the same player but it finally had a problem playing discs, when the layer change comes, even with original discs, so I assumed my unit was defective. I bought a new one, and at the very beginning it played the discs perfectly well. But now, it's producing the same errors again. Therefore I don't know if the unit is defective again, the laser is just very sensitive, or I am doing something wrong. -
Suggestions that pop into my head for troubleshooting-
Allow the burns to do the verification - that will give you more data if/where there is a failure in burning (and you can share the data)
What speed is your burn?
Have you tried playing the burned discs in another player? (Even, say, on you LG or Pioneer on the PC?)
This is why I mentioned before about getting at least one rewriteable BD-50 - it helps with troubleshooting the problem. You can burn over and over to try to find where the issue is.
What programs are using in the process?
I have read about issues with the x700
https://www.reddit.com/r/4kbluray/comments/zhr0zw/ive_been_having_issues_with_my_sony_ubpx700/
https://www.reddit.com/r/4kbluray/comments/zf2yv7/yet_another_sony_x700_problem_post/
From a user on AVSforum regarding x700
--"So, I went ahead and bought an X700/M because the black Friday/cyber week deal was just so good. I'm a bit worried about the reports of issues at layer changes on UHD discs though. Some people seem to find that having good ventilation for the player helps, but there doesn't seem to be much consensus on the topic online. How bad are the layer change issues on UHD discs and is there anything one can do to avoid them?"--
Answer from another user:
"I'm a member of a Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos group on facebook. There's a member in that group who posted very specific settings to set for the X700 that will prevent that issue. I had my brand new Jurassic World Dominion UHD disc freeze up on me the second time I played the disc but after I made the changes that he specified I haven't had a single issue."
"4k upscale setting off always, HDR output and output video resolution on AUTO, Ip content NR-off, HDMI deep colour output-Auto, cinema conversion mode on Video not auto, under system settings quick start mode or auto standby- On, under HDMI settings control for HDMI-On, LINKED to TV off-INVALID, HDMI audio output normal Auto only, under network settings remote start-off, under BD/DVD viewing settings Allow for network content..
Under audio settings make sure only the first digital audio output is auto and the rest are all off down to downmix mode which should be set to Surround and upsampling should be 48khz.. youll never have an issue again make sure enhanced mode is enabled in TV settings for external devices and the receiver in both TV and the receivers settings if using it as passthrough for atmos or DTS X purposes afterwards unplug the player from wall for 3-4 minutes for soft reset and allow settings to adjust and make sure they all remain and youll never have an issue again"
I'm not sure this is your issue- but it may be helpful. From what I have read, it certainly seems that you suspecting the x700 player being your issue is definitely a possibility -
Skipping the verification is huge. I'd include verification for all burned discs. If the verification fails, the problem is either the disc quality or drive firmware. In that case, check for updated firmware or custom firmware from makemkv. Or try different brand discs. I never had issues with BD50 discs - even the low quality Ridata, windata etc. played well. But occasionally some discs in all brands fail during verification process and I discard them.

Here I come with more info. First of all, thank you very much for your answers, as they helped me a lot.
I changed my standalone player for a Panasonic UBP450, guessing the error was there. My mistake.
I waited until I received the new player to continue with the burning process. Firstly, I tried all the disc that failed before, and they continue failing. Expected, anyway. Then, I burnt some new discs, and I'm still having a 50% success rate. Half of them work, and half of them have problems with lawyer change. I repeat I', using not two, but three burners, an internal LG UB40, an external Pioneer drive, and an old Samsung unit, It does not matter which one I use, as they all have a success rate of 50%. Some of the discs work, some not. And I'm using in all of them a slow burning process (2x). And also, using two different discs brands, Verbatim and Mediarange. It does not matter. 50% success rate.
It's very desperating wasting discs without knowing how to fix the problem, as there is not a common mistake. Using two different players, and three different burners, and having in all of them the same mistakes, it's desperating.
And it does not matter if I do the verification process or not, as the best verification is playing the contents and checking if there is something wrong playing them.
Any hints apart from sending everything to the garbage bin? -
While you are in the process of trying to figure out this problem – please use verbatim BD-RE DL rewritable discs so you are not wasting discs!!
So - it sound like you can eliminate the player and the burners (although I still recommend NOT using LG for 2 layers discs)
Are you using IMGBURN for burning? (UDF 2.50)
Did you get a brand new pack of BD50 DLs (to make sure you didn't have a bad batch before)?
Does IMGBURN (or whatever program you are using) verification specifically log that there is failure at the layer break?
Have you tried different ISO files (or Blu ray folders) when testing? (To rule out the file itself being corrupted)
Were any other PC processes running at the same time you were burning? (IMGBURN can sometimes get persnickety if other processes are running)
Did you try another burning program just to see if it does the exact same thing? (Again- use rewriteable BD50-DL!)Last edited by C.C. 95; 5th May 2023 at 20:48.

Where is the error you will have to find out by experimenting with different ways of burning discs. Of course, as indicated, perform these tests on rewritable discs.
If I can tell you, my Panasonic 450 reads ALL the BDXL discs I've ever used.
I ONLY use Verbatim discs and burn with Nero at 4x, UDF 2.50 and no verification. With ImgBurn I have had bad experiences. The recorder is an internal ASUS BW-16D1HT.
It's been a long time since I burned 50 GB discs, but I also exclusively used Verbatim and in this case I did it with ImgBurn, without verification and at the speed supported by the disc. In this case I use an internal LG BH16NS40 to record.
The error rate with those parameters is ridiculous.
All the best. -
While you are in the process of trying to figure out this problem – please use verbatim BD-RE DL rewritable discs so you are not wasting discs!!
I'll buy one specifically for the process, but some time ago I tried using a BD-RE SL and my player did not read them. I have changed my player several times since then, so I'll try with a new one.
So - it sound like you can eliminate the player and the burners (although I still recommend NOT using LG for 2 layers discs)
Are you using IMGBURN for burning? (UDF 2.50)
Yes, IMGBURN, 2x, UDF 2.50.
Did you get a brand new pack of BD50 DLs (to make sure you didn't have a bad batch before)?
I'm using either Verbatim (same batch) and Mediarage discs. Same failure rate on both of them.
Does IMGBURN (or whatever program you are using) verification specifically log that there is failure at the layer break?
The last two discs I have burnt I used the verification process. Both of them passed the verification proccess correctly, but then the first one worked smoothly and the second one did not played correctly on the lawyer break.
Have you tried different ISO files (or Blu ray folders) when testing? (To rule out the file itself being corrupted)
I'm backing up all my UHD collection, so it's like 50 different discs I have tried.
Were any other PC processes running at the same time you were burning? (IMGBURN can sometimes get persnickety if other processes are running)
I'm using the computer while burning. Google Chrome, Photoshop, and sometimes DVDFab to shrink the BDXL discs to a BD DL. But tonight, I left the computer on without anything working just burning a disc, and it failed.
Did you try another burning program just to see if it does the exact same thing? (Again- use rewriteable BD50-DL!)
Nop. I was thinking about Nero. I'm even thinking about using another computer just to burn the discs. To eliminate all the possibilities.Last edited by ernnnn; 6th May 2023 at 05:15.

I think I have found the poop. And the poop is....... My laptop!! I started burning discs on a different computer, that one I never use but it's powerful enough to run all the programs. I have burnt three discs, those that previously failed miserably on my laptop (one of them 5 TIMES IN A ROW), and the three of them are working flawlesly on my standalone player. And they were burnt using the usual suspects settings, and even at the maximum speed. So, there is something wrong with my laptop. It's working perfectly well with anything else, but not transferring data to discs, for some reasons I cannot understand. So my problem seems to be fixed, fingers crossed.
-
That's great to hear that you have solved the mystery! (But, I still recommened getting BD-50 RE DLs rewritable discs so you never have to worry about coasters and wasted discs again. Always do preliminary burns on rewritable to make sure everything is ok.)
Maybe do a fresh install of the program on the laptop, and run CHKDSK /F, or DISM to see if anything is wrong.
Otherwise, you seem to found the issue and solved it! Kudos!
