  1. I have been using Avidemux to loslessly cut .mp4 files without re-encoding from my Panasonic camera.
It works for MP4s with no audio, but those with audio fail, with the error message:
"Audio track 1 out of 1 is incompatible
Only AAC, AC3, DTS, E-AC3, MP2, MP3 and Vorbis supported for audio
    Muxer can't open
    "
    Examining the MP4 file shows it's "QT PCM 48000Hz stereo 1536kbps [A: pcm_s16be, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, s16, 1536 kb/s]"
Is there any way to get Avidemux to work with these MP4 files?
If not, is there any other software, preferably freeware, that can be recommended?
    Thanks in advance.

Have you tried losslesscut, it allows you to cut/save without reencoding, avidemux2 does it as well, can you share a video so that we have a go at it?
    Hope it helps

    Thanks for your reply.
I tried LosslesCut but it gave an error and wouldn't cut the .MP4.
What is Avidemux2? Your link just seems to be for the old regular Avidemux which I already have.
By the way, here's a link to the .mp4 file:

Is there anyway to do it without re-encoding the audio?

Sorry i meant virtualdub2, i tested your file but it seems your audio codec is incompatible with mp4 container, saving as mkv worked fine, if you really want a mp4 file just rename the file extension from mkv to mp4, worked here.

  6. Hi Ricardouk.
What program did you use to successfully cut it?

  7. AviDemux can trim and save as MOV without any reencoding.

  8. Thanks. In the end, changing the extension from .mp4 to .mkv before loading in Avidemux allowed it to be cut successfully without error. Just had to change the output file back to .mp4 afterwards.
To get it to work in LosslessCut: It actually detects the .MP4 file as QuickTime/MOV in the Export options, not .MP4. If leave as QuickTime/MOV in LosslessCut's settings rather than change to .mp4, it completes the export without error.
Both Avidemux and LosslessCut finished quickly and the output file appeared to be the same quality as the original, so despite the file extension renaming, it really does seem to be just cutting rather than re-encoding and cutting.
Not quite sure what is going on here? Normally I don't need to rename files like this when using Avidemux. But the workaround seems to work. Thanks for all the suggestons to those who replied.

Normal implementations of mp4 don't allow for lpcm audio. Mov has always allowed and often expects lpcm audio.
But under the hood, mp4 and mov are basically identical (because mp4 used mov as its basis for structure).

  10. Update: What I found was that the Panasonic files cut with Avidemux will no longer be accepted and opened in Sony Vegas 13 Pro. Somehow they are no longer compatible.
Is there any way round this?
    Thanks in advance.

Maybe Simple Video Editor v.1.4.2.0 can get it to work with the feature "disable audio".. im not sure if it would re-encode the video when just removing audio.. it is open source freeware and doesnt leave any watermarks!

Edit: The program have FFMpeg command line options/arguments which will launch by clicking 'ctrl' + save button, maybe it is possible to preserve the codec using an command.

Edit2: An freeware i just got and tested 2 days ago that allow for disabling audio/copy audio (no re-encode) and allso to trim/crop/flip/rotate/copy video (no re-encode) is MystiQ Video Converter v.20.02.18... It does not leave any watermarks and is completely free.. Just beware that this version avalible for downloads have one 64bit (x64) version and one 32bit (x86) version.. The 32bit (x86) had 6 virus hits so if you want download this one you really dont want the 32bit (x86) version, atleast not where i downloaded from..

I have been using the 64bit version and it is working fine.
