  1. Hi. The DVD I've copied to my PC has 7 sets of VOB files. They're all trailers and extras apart from VTS_06_1 to VTS_06_6 which is the main movie. As you can see from the attachment, there are 2 distinct VID's (I don't fully understand what a VID is) and I think it is this fact that's causing my problem: how can I extract a single VOB of the movie using PgcDemux?

Using the setting in the first pic, I'm getting 6 individual VOBs. Shouldn't that setting give me one big VOB?

If I change the Mode to 'by VOB id' (second pic) there's no option for a 1hr 23m file.

Is it possible to get a single VOB in this instance? Thank you.

VID is an abbreviation of "VOB ID".

"Mode: (•) by PGC" is correct. "[√] Create a PGC VOB" is also correct. Also working with VOB ID's in the (•) Title domain.

You just forgot the most obvious checkbox: "[√] One file per VID" – because you want one continuous file per VOB-ID, not split each GB as usual on a DVD.

No need for additional software (which also knows less about IFOs than PGCDemux).

  4. Ah, but there are two VIDs, remember. Which means that checking that box gives me two VOBs and I was hoping for one VOB containing the whole movie...

It's beginning to look as if PgcDemux won't suffice (although I could work with the two VOBs – the cut is in a sensible place.) From what I've read, I'd need the pro version of VOB2MPEG to extract a single title and I'm a tight fisted b*****d when it comes to apps.

Thanks for your input, though, guys, I appreciate it.

Well, I do not have your DVD, so I cannot test what happens, I'm sorry ... if a PGC has more than one VOB ID, there will be a reason for it (and a consumer DVD player might take this as a reason to take a break, possibly?). Unfortunately, I am a little bit not savvy enough to know (not to mention explain) the reason. I hope someone with more insight can.

DVDDecrypter can easily give you one VOB file.....but it cannot open a VIDEO-TS folder(on a hard drive).

Even DVDShrink can do it.....just like DVDDecrypter there are settings you need to look for to enable single VOB output......and DVDShrink opens VIDEO_TS folders already ripped to the HDD.

I guess vStrip might be able... "Output" offers "Split: Never".

    Old, but never obsolete!
    _

And the last idea: Use ImgBurn to create an ISO to mount in a virtual drive to access with a ripper ...

    My question is 'why?'

if you want to play it as something other than a DVD, hech54's suggestion of VOB2MPEG is a much better solution. If you want to convert it to something else it's not necessary to join the VOBs.

So, why are you asking how to do this?

DVD Decrypter, in the IFO Mode settings can also be made to decrypt a single PGC to a single VOB. If the DVD is already on the hard drive you'll have to mount it first, before then creating the single VOB file using DVD Decrypter.

  10. 'Why?' is easily answered – curiosity. I just like to know how things work, what a program is capable of. Most video converting/editing programs have loads of Options/Preferences/Settings and just because you can't find a way to do what you want doesn't necessarily mean the program isn't capable. That's where the good people of this forum come in.

What you said about not needing to join the VOBs for conversion made me think. I've always assumed that megui needed a single input file (of a standard file type). Turns out I was wrong. I've just loaded VTS_06_0.VOB into its File Indexer and there's my full movie ready for me to start work on a script. And that's what I wanted in the first place.

We live and learn. Thanks again to you all for your time.

The alternative to a continuous VOB file are continuous elementary streams (demultiplexed to m2v + e.g. ac3, mp2, LPCM as WAV). But subtitle streams will better be in a ProgramStream to stay in sync with timecodes before they get extracted to e.g. VobSub files.
