I had been using VirtualDub for months to transfer VHS tapes without much problem. I went away to school and hadn't used the program in months. Now that I'm back home I wanted to get the rest of the tapes done. I ran immediately into some problems, the audio either speeding up, or gradually going out of sync (when I checked "do not resync between audio and video streams" as suggested on here).
I decided to try my other computer, since it's specs are much higher, but now when I try and capture VirtualDub crops the footage to 720x240 or 720x288. That, and the issues with the slow/fast audio and desyncing are still present. I have checked every setting I can find on Virtualdub, but to no avail.
Is there anything that I'm missing?
Signal Chain
-tape (off-air recordings, etc.)
-VCR (cheap Sylvania DVD/VCR, has not caused these problems until now)
-Diamond VC500 Capture Device
-either
-Laptop -Desktop
Intel Core i5-2410M running 2.3 GHz AMD FX-8350 running 4 GHz
6 GB RAM 1333MHz 8 GB RAM 1600MHz
internal HDD 640 GB secondary HDD 2 TB
Intel Integrated 3000 GeForce GTX 750 1 GB
Windows 7 64bit Windows 7 64 bit

Sorry for the long post, but I want to be as thorough as possible.

Have you tried virtualdub 32bit? Or any other capture utility?
-
Check your interlacing settings.
That appears to be a single field capture. -
On my laptop, I tried using 32 bit, so I could actually use filters and plugins. The problems with audio sync persisted and there was also some strange artifacting in the video, even after removing the plugins.
On the note of the interlacing settings, how do I checks those, as the problem continues even after I remove the deinterlace plugin?
This is what it always outputs. I can't find anyway to change it. -
To be honest, it is a long time since I last used vdub to capture but that, if memory serves, was an issue I encountered (and it could have been a quirk of my device)
I cannot test this now since I do not have a capture device in this PC.
But I would suggest, so that others may assist, that you quote ALL your capture settings since there may be something simple you have over-looked. -
I would check "Sync video to audio by adjusting video timing" and in editing mode Video->Frame Rate "Change so audio and video durations match".
No idea for the cropping ? Filtering while capturing is disable ? -

So are you capturing "interlaced" xvid?
Xvid is already old and crappy, interlaced Xvid is probably worse.
Avoid xvid.

Look through everything on the Video menu (Capture Pin, Capture Filter, Capture Crossbar, Filter Chain, etc.) and look for interlace and cropping options.

Sorry I didn't get back any sooner, I've been away from my computer since yesterday. I still don't know the reason that it won't capture correctly, but I did try installing 32 bit virtual dub and it is working better on my desktop than my laptop.
I just need to remember to resize the videos, because now it captures the full frame, but at a screwed up aspect ratio. Not a huge problem and I'm not looking for perfection, so I'm not going to worry about it since the footage looks fine resized.
Thanks everyone for the help! -

The last post by the OP really annoys me. He doesn't know the answer but can not be bothered to try to find out given the assistance he has had.
Why bother to create the topic in the first place. -
I created the topic because part of the picture was getting cut off, more than likely from an issue with interlacing, since only about 60% of the screen was being shown. After following the directions of you nice folks, now it outputs the full picture, it is just stretched, a problem which is solved by fixing the aspect ratio of the output video.
You are right in that I do not know the reason or the settings that caused my problem before, but you all helped me get it working properly and even told me about features that I didn't even know it had (syncing the audio). -
