  1. When i rip a film with a menu DVD Decrypter, then burn it, it will not play on VLC. It will play on Windows media player. I can see the menu and can click on it but it does not play. I unticked start from mmenu in VLC

is it the menu and can that be removed with dvd decrypter.?

The original will play on VLC when i click play in the menu.

I would appreciate if anyone could say why and what to do. i can play it on the TV standalone but I would like to understand.

it is my film which I bought and want to make backup

  2. Not enough information. So, you decrypted the entire film using DVD Decrypter in File Mode? Does it play from the hard drive in VLC? And how did you burn it to disc? IMGBurn, I hope? And this DVD, since it plays in your standalone, it's most likely a good DVD. Have you tried it in other software DVD players besides WMP, ones such as MPC-HC or MPC-BE?

Yes, you can decrypt just the movie using IFO Mode in DVD Decrypter. No menu.

And I'd attach no importance to a DVD not playing in VLC. I don't think it's a very good DVD player to begin with and don't use it.

    BurnAware

    Seems so

    Do not have these

    Thanks

  5. I think its good
And so do I. But it has it's faults when it comes to playing DVD. I know from my own experience that it has it's fault with first-play commands. My software "reference" DVD player is Cyberlink PowerDVD which I find more DVD compliant.

  7. Download PGCEdit

load VIDEO_TS and CLOSE first pop up wizzard (looking for BOV's, you do not need that)

press "toggle trace mode" icon , top bar, second from the right (two arrows in blue circle)

now press "step" button (down on screen, left hand corner), keep pressing, .., this way you are actually navigating through DVD manually , keep pressing,.., when you get to your menu, you have to select some button that you will see on screen and press select ..., keep pressing "step" button again until you actually get to your title ..

if navigation is as you'd expect, DVD navigation is alright, and therefore there is a bug in VLC player ...

A "first play" is a short video that plays before the main menu appears. First play commands control playing that video. For example, the person authoring the DVD may want to show the first play after the DVD is initially inserted in the player but not when the movie is over and the main menu is re-displayed.

Apparently it plays in everything but VLC Player. Right? Doesn't that tell you something? Anyway, until you've burned it using ImgBurn there's no point in me participating any further because I don't think it's been established the burning program isn't at fault. And I wasn't knocking VLC Player as a general file player, only as a DVD player. Like videobruger, PowerDVD is my 'reference' DVD player, although I do use MPC-HC/MPC-BE a lot. There are also a bunch I've never tried.

    .
How to tell what to remove? There are two folders PGC 1 and PGC 2. One is 12 seconds and the other one and half hours. Is the short one the menu?

Those who are telling you to use ImgBurn instead of BurnAware are doing so because they suspect that BurnAware is not burning the DVD correctly.

And the movie's length is one and a half hours, isn't it? Does that give you the answer to your question about how to get the movie without the menu? Neither is the menu.

You remove nothing. You get the movie without the menu. When you use DVD Decrypter in IFO Mode it automatically points to the longest PGC (title), not to a menu.

Shrink is way out of date too. What would you suggest as a modern shrink

Maybe. But in contrast to protection schemes where new ones are constantly developed the video codec used for a DVD has remained unchanged so there isn't the same need for a "modern" one.

DVD Shrink may be old, but since it works with DVD files and folders that were already decrypted and copied onto a hard drive using other software, it is still a reasonably good tool to use for shoehorning dual layer DVD movies onto single layer DVDs. DVD Rebuilder Free is another tool that can be used for reducing the size of movies on dual layer DVDs so they will fit on single layer DVDs, but DVD Shrink is supposed to transcode a bit faster

The only problem is that the free DVD decrypters that rip to a DVD structure and do not try to connect to the Internet are unable to deal with some forms of copy protection. ...so if you don't want to use DVD Fab HD Decrypter free, then you will have to live with the inability to copy some movies produced in the last 8 years or so.
