  1. While playing a title within a DVD folder with VLC I'm unable to display the menu again. IOW after its initial use to start play, I can't get back to it again. Neither via the right click menu Playback > Title > DVD menu

    nor the tool button

I tried this with several DVDs and versions 1.1.7, 1.1.11 and 2.0.7.

And sometimes that tool button disappears, even though the DVD does have a menu.

BTW, this VLC facility to play a DVD folder from the context menu is one of the main reasons it's been my preferred player for so long.

Edit: Earlier I wrote "Pity that MPC-HC doesn't do this." But I see that indeed it does!

You created this dvd yourself ? Did you author it to return to menu after playing title ?

    Try this:

From the 'Media Menu' select 'Open Disc'. Browse to the disc and hit the 'play' button. That should invoke the menu and should return to it if the disc is authoried correctly. Just tested with one of my own creations and 1.1.7

  3. Thanks for coming back on this. But are we both talking about the same thing? I was focusing on how to interrupt play at any point and display the main menu, which I thought I could once do in VLC. However after further experiment I think I'm interpreting 'DVD Menu' differently! VLC apparently does not mean the Main menu as I thought, but what I call the Chapter menu. There's lots of room for confusion here. I vaguely remember that one of the authoring programs I've worked with over the years - I think it was TMPGEnc DVD Author (TDA) - interchanged 'Titles' and 'Chapters'. Anyway, the 120 or so DVDs that I've made are a mixture from 4 different programs. (My current program, used for the last 4 or 5 years, is Magix Movie Edit Pro.)

Anyway I've tested about 20 DVDs so far and that's why I came to the conclusion above. When there is no such Chapter Menu, 'DVD Menu' is already checked, as in that first screenshot I presented

and has no effect when clicked. I've found no way to get to the single page Main Menu in this case.

When there is a Chapter Menu, then it is displayed when 'DVD Menu' is clicked. And then it's possible to navigate from that back to the Main Menu if desired.

But I'm still experimenting. And although it's only been a few hours I'm getting on well with MPC-HC. It has menus that actually make sense to me, both in their terminology, structure and what they do!

I misunderstood what you were asking.

A software player should be able to simulate the effect when you hit the menu button on a remote. In fact 1.1.7 has a menu button which appears when a dvd is loaded. Click on that to return to the top menu.
