  1. I ripped dvds from a tv show to the harddrive so i dont have to keep switching discs. While doing so i discovered a VTS file video i cant locate through the DVD menu itself. Ive checked through all the menu items. It seems to be part of the bonus scenes but there seems to be no way to get to it other than physically clicking the VTS file when exploring the DVD. All the other bonus video have a link from the dvd bonus menu. Im wondering if ive overlooked something. Its the very last VTS on the disc.

Is there a way with some program that i can see what dvd menu item brings me to this specific VTS?

    thanks for your time

  2. Those were called Easter eggs. Each button has a number in the menu. You can press number of that button manually, you do not have to navigate in the menu and press button. So there could be hidden button in the menu that you cannot see on the screen. You just have to know the number.
You can do DVD like that even yourself.

Explore PGCEDIT, it is for DVD only, not BD, it can show you navigation, buttons, etc.

There may not be any menu pointing to this footage. It's unusual but I seen video on DVDs to which nothing points and with no way to watch it other than just playing a VOB. If I were you, I'd just play the VOB with this mysterious video and forget about trying to get to it via a menu. However, if there is a way to get to it, PGCEdit is the program to use. Open the DVD, right-click on the menus one at a time to 'Preview PGC', and check what they contain. You may have to look for a menu with no buttons, but it should be in the same VTSM as the rest of the menus. I doubt you'll find anything, though. If you do, then comes the task of (perhaps) adding in a button and giving it instructions to go to the video when clicked.

Edit: Oh, right, an Easter Egg. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks, _Al_. If that's the answer, go to that Extras menu when using PGCEdit and you should be able to easily discover the number to hit on your remote control to access it. Hit 'Menu Buttons' rather than 'Preview PGC'. And sometimes on the DVD you hit left or right on the remote control, followed by 'Enter' to access a hidden button. Its location on the menu should provide a clue. And often reviews of a DVD tell you how to access the Easter Eggs.

    Can't it also be "nothing"?
If this isn't a VOB, then couldn't it be just a pointer of some sort to replay an existing piece of video like end credits or a piece of menu?

  5. thanks for the timely reply al, manano and hech. i will totally give this a shot and try PGC Edit. thanks for the guidance.

sorry i should have clarified Hech. It is a VOB with the VTS title number. It has a .IFO, .BUP and .VOB attributed to the number. When i click on that VOB i can see the video.

It's not common at all, but I've seen it done deliberately on a small number of region 1 DVDs. I have always assumed it was done for the following reasons.
    1) The added mysterious unreferenced VOB made the entire contents big enough to exceed the capacity of a single layer DVD and forced the use of a dual layer disc. So it may have served as fake padding to fool consumers into thinking that "dual layer disc on this movie = higher quality".
    2) It may have been placed on the disc deliberately to lower the quality for people who shrink dual layer DVDs to single layer size because the vast majority of people who rip won't ever catch it and the shrinking program will waste bits trying to shrink an unused VOB, which will also force the movie itself to be shrunk more than really necessary so that everything fits onto a single layer DVD. Of course for those who do "movie only" discs, this will have no effect.

  7. Great success! It turns out it is indeed an Easter Egg. After looking at the bonus menus with PgcEdit I noticed that there was an invisible button on one of the bonus menus. Clicking it takes you to the secret video. Thanks for all your help everyone!
