What about VCR?
I have: VCR, DVR, Analog capture card, DVD recorder, Firewire, and USB devices.Andrew Jackson: "It's a poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word." -

I think I misunderstood the question when I selected from the available devices earlier. Recording HDTV transport streams directly using a digital tuner of some kind might be considered capture by some. To avoid confusion, the question should be rephrased if it only pertains to capturing analog video sources like VHS or Betamax.
[Edit] My mistake. I guess the question was changed already. -
johns0: VCR is what you capture from.Poll: How do you capture(record)your video device

You may only have used a VCR to output analog video signals to a computer, but I have used mine to receive input from a computer.
Remember the world before PC HDDs and CDs? A lot of simple editing was done from one VCR to another.
The home VCR (VHS format) was available in the late 1970s, the HDDs in mid-1980s, and the CD-R was introduced in 1990.
Now get off my lawn(but I do agree that these days home VCRs typically output to a TV or a capture device).

I set a tape on top of the keyboard, and overnight elves use their magic.

How about a combination of the above? I record shows to my dvr then I transfer ones I want to keep to my dvd recorder then import to my computer to edit out commercials and finally back out to a finalized dvd.

That is a lot of work.
I record on a dvd recorder & it has a skip 1 minute button to jump through commercials.
But if you use hulu.com you can get your program anytime online & it's recorded on their servers :-0 I run a cool 30' hdmi cable from my computer to my TV so I can watch it on my tv -
