    does anyone know why this happens. the dvd is a mulit region dvd and my ps2 is pal

    The PS2 doesn't have an NTSC to PAL converter in it and neither does your TV by the sounds of it. Therefore an NTSC DVD will always come out black and white - regardless of region. Not a lot you can do really without major rework converting the DVD to PAL (reburn it) - or buy a TV that supports NTSC (or DVD player that does the conversion for you..)
