  1. Can someone post the best handbrake settings (time not an issue) to encode a movie for WDTV ? I tried some high settings but the player struggles to play them back (stuttering)!

HD or SD? What are you playing the files from? Wireless network? Wired network? USB hard drive? USB thumb drive?

I can play up to about 40 Mb/s h.264 1080p24 via a wired network connection without any problems. Higher from a USB drive. Some versions of the firmware have had problems with some h.264 MP4 files. I haven't been able to isolate exactly what it doesn't like about the files, but it's not bitrate related.

Use the template for Apple TV, 720p, then your files will play on iPad too.

  4. Does handbrake have DXVA presets? Those would be safe too.

It will be HD, played from a local USB hard drive.

  8. Do the Apple TV presets limit you to 720p?

Yes, it would. The iPad maxes out at 720p30.

Don't know about the Apple TV (2nd Gen), that one probably plays 1080, but I doubt many people have that after the failure of the first gen.

I don't notice an appreciable difference between 720 and 1080, and I have a 52" TV. Many computer monitors don't do 1080 either without scaling down.

I suppose there's always a tradeoff. 720p30 seems to be the happy medium.

  10. Isn't the apple tv v1 and v2 presets stereo down converted?

I mostly just create ISO's now, but when I did re-encode everything for my WDTV (v2 hacked firmware)

I created my own preset in Handbrake for my WDTV
    Mkv container
    Cropping set to auto
    Anamorphic set to strict
h.264 set to constant quality and 17
    AC3 pass through
    subtitle set to non-english only
I also setup the advanced settings, but I'm not in front of that computer right now.

I'm tried to workout a encode that would work on my WDTV and my iPad, but I could see the difference on my TV. Now, if I do a re-encode, I do 1 for each. Also the iPad2 will play AC3 5.1 as stereo, so Handbrake's iPad/apple tv 2 preset needs to be updated
tgpo famous MAC commercial, You be the judge?

Here's my "secret recipe". It's basically 4K VBR. I can't see any difference. Boy, that iPad really has a vibrant, sharp, rich playback. I'm an Apple hater, but gotta be fair.

You can load up a demo reel and it becomes an instant sales tool. I'm not a pro, just do odd jobs here and there, but there's no more powerful impact on people. It's a great device.

The WDTV should have no problems keeping up with anything, I play from my backed up Blu ray movies in raw format and it plays just fine. I think you problem is that your setting are wrong, like say if your DVD is NTSC and it 720x480 chances are it's bitrate is FILM (23.976) i would pick in the Video Filters tab - Detelecine->Default, and under Video tab I would put Frame rate to Same as source. try that, if it still stutters I would believe you have a serious problem with your Hardware or Encoder.

Frame rate is correct. I tried some episodes from Planet Earth in 1080p h264 that was stuttering badly. If I use too many reference frames it usually has a problem.

From what? Network share? USB hard drive? Was it a straight Blu-ray rip or reencoded? I find that high bitrate 1080p24 files can have problems via Windows network shares. But those same files play fine from Linux network shares (same drive, same computer, dual boot).

Too many b-frames might give it problems too.

  15. It was a USB share. Anyway I gave away the sucker, moved on to a raspberry pi with xbmc! All ok there

  16. I don't know if this helps, but my Asus O!play had problems with handbrake for a while, and it was because I was using framerate set at "same as original" and variable framerate. Try setting the framerate manually and choosing constant framerate.
