2.51, and that is likely to be the last release from what I can see. The DVD spec hasn't changed, and unless they decide to release a version 3 with BD authoring as the core, I doubt they will continue the product.

Although if you are running the latest version of DVD Lab Pro then I don't know what your complaints are based on. I can produce anything that any other authoring tool can. That said, I only use DLP to assemble all the components. Everything else is created in other programs. But I do the same with other authoring tools I use as well.

Utilitarian interface aside, there is little else out there in the same price bracket that can come even close to covering all the features that DLP has.

  3. Hmm funny thing. I thought DVDLabPro was long-abandonware, but I just checked the website and it has been recently redesigned, still taking orders etc, also the forum is down. I am wondering, is Mediachance coming back to life? Would be very nice if this is so!

  5. Well reading the recent MMB forum posts it seems Oscar the developer went AWOL or lost interest or something, and users were crying out to release the source code etc, as there were still some bugs needing ironed out, plus demand for Blu-Ray support etc... But now as I said the website has been fully refurbished, the forum is "under construction" etc, so it looks like Oscar is back in the game? Who knows?

Having said that, I've never ran into any bugs with DLP, it's always worked well for me, although I've barely scraped the surface of what it is capable of. I haven't used Editstudio but it looks like a mature, feature-rich NLE suite.

so you can make objects and buttons appear on motion menus without harcoding it onto the video your using as the menu background??

if i try to use a button thats shaped like a rectangle, it will show the same way text does with those same 8 color choices. the way the button looks in the button section doesnt show unless its a regular basic menu

No. To make them appear smoothly in a motion menu they must be part of the video. That is because of the DVD spec, not the authoring tool. However I do not use any of DVD Lab Pro's motion menu tools. I create the menus, including an text etc., in Vgas, then import this to DLP for authoring. All I add in DLP is the indicator - usually a line or symbol of some form - which is an overlay and doesn't require any encoding. I have never used DLPs Render Motion options, and have never needed to. Were I to switch to another authoring tool (and I have and do use a couple of different ones) I would not change my current workflow.

Again, I don't use any of the buttons etc in DLP. I create them in Photoshop if needed, and add them in Vegas if it is a motion menu. No authoring tool supports the use of full colour, magically appearing buttons, as the DVD spec doesn't support it.

Bottom line, regardless of which authoring tool you use, the key is planning and asset preparation. Plan and prepare correctly, and you can get great results out of most tools. What DLP adds is the ability to quickly add very advanced authoring features like proper chapter and title playlists, delayed cell menus, and coding features. While other tools offer some of these, very few off all of them, and none do so for the same price bracket. Not everyone needs all of these, so DLP isn't for everyone, and there are plenty of well featured alternatives for those that don't. However none of them will do things outside the spec, or compensate for a lack of planning and preparation.
