Any recommendations as to what external full frame TBC I should get with a budget of around £100?
Thanks

This one, at least externally, is just like the AV Toolbox AVT-8710 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/276891-REG/AV_Toolbox_AVT_8710_AVT_8710_Multi_St...Time_Base.html) and you can find it about 30 dollars cheaper on ebay.
Some guys here may know if it's the same internally.
I got an used Panasonic ES15, as some people here said it does a good job. But I may try to save some money and get the AVT-8710 on BH. -
The CBT-100 you linked to is apparently identical to the well-known AVT-8710 sold in NTSC countries, repackaged for the PAL market. Reports from European VH members indicate its performance and controls are the same as the AVT. Whether the CBT-100 is more optimized for PAL, or if indeed there is any functional difference at all from the AVT-8710, I couldn't tell you since we don't have access to the CBT-100 in North America. Overall the CBT-100 is probably the best price-performance TBC you can buy for consumer or semi-pro use in PAL countries.
The Panasonic ES15 recommended by Caple is not a TBC but actually an old DVD recorder with unique pass-thru TBC-like functionality. It is not interchangeable with the CBT-100, they serve different functions, some people need one, some the other, some both. The CBT-100/AVT-8710 stabilize faulty signals from a VCR, keep lipsync stable when it is an issue, and eliminate copy protection signals from broadcasts and/or tapes. The special circuit in the Panasonic ES15 (and ES10) uses "brute force" to cure obnoxious visual distortion thats goes beyond the capabilities of a standard TBC. If you have seriously poor tapes that display severe bending at the top of the screen, "washboard" horizontal image pulling all across the screen, or certain kinds of stubborn jitter, then the Panasonic ES10/ES15 can be a lifesaver: amazingly these will succeed in straightening out such tapes while even megabuck professional TBCs will fail. Of course there is a penalty: the Panasonic recorders used as pass-thru "TBCs" are not nearly as transparent as a genuine standalone TBC, they add an extra re-encode and other artifacts that can be undesirable. You have to trade off the benefits of the stabilized, straightened image against possible degradation in color, contrast and sharpness. The Panasonic pass-thru function is only available on the ES10/ES15/ES20 models, all of which are four-five years old and discontinued. The circuit is strongest in the ES10 and weaker in the other two models. Note the old Panasonic circuit is very specific to correcting image tearing and jitter, it will not help with lipsync audio issues or copy protection issues.Last edited by orsetto; 29th Jun 2010 at 13:14.

Great, this has all been lots of help. I don't suppose anyone can link me to an example of what the ES10 can do?

Googling around you may find better examples. But just reading here about the ES10 and ES15 gives you a good ideia of what it can do. -
You would do well to read this: What is a TBC? Time Base Correction for Videotapes
That's an earlier version of an article I've written on the TBCs found in current consumer and pro devices.
That should clear up some confusion over TBCs, and what they do.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
