    hi,

wondering if anyone can help me.

i've recently bought pinnacle 11 for capturing and editing my movies

i ran a capture from my camcorder last night and it caught all the video fine but only got about 2 mins of sound.
i ran it again and got 5 mins of sound before it cut off.

i've checked the tape and thats fine - run the capture a few more times today and seems to be getting a bit more of the sound each time but not all of it

i'm running windows vista on a sony CR series laptop. i'm connecting via mini firewire to the camera.
the camera is a JVC GR-DVP

i used to use pinnace on my old desktop (cant remember which version - its been a year or so since last using it) and never had this problem on that machine with this camera.

    any ideas?

    cheers,

    lhg033

Welcome to the world of Pinnacle.

You can try their user forums, which is probably the only place you'll find useful information and any chance of solving your problem.

However, be advised that this kind of strange malady is what Pinnacle is known for, especially 10, and apparently 11.

Or you can call Pinnacle Tech Support and be told "uninstall and reinstall Pinnacle", which seems to be pretty much their stock answer to everything.

I had nothing but problems with Pinnacle 8 under Win98SE which came bundled with a DVD burner. I've had somewhat better luck with Pinnacle 9 under XP but run into issues at times.

Probably the most common answer to your question would be "try a different program".

For capturing, there's a freeware app called WinDV that works great.

Sounds to me like you're not truely capturing, but putting the data from your camcorder into your computer. That's just a data transfer and WinDV will do the job.

I don't know anything about Pinnacle and I don't think I want to.

In any case, you should be fine at this stage of the game by using WinDV to transfer. Perhaps some of the other features of your Pinnacle software will be useful for later applications.

The thing about Pinnacle Studio is it has an extremely intuitive, well thought-out interface. Unfortunately, the internals of it seem to be plagued with problems and they seem to vary from system to system. One person swears they've never had a bit of problem with it they don't understand why anyone complains about it, someone else has nothing but problems.

9 mostly works for what I need but given what I know about the history of the product, I don't necessarily recommend it. My advice to anyone who thinks they want to try it is to find a cheap, registerable copy on Ebay and if it works, great, if not sell it and look elsewhere.
