I downloaded a movie. It is in AVI format. When I try to open it in TMPGEnc it says "illigal format". What do I do now?
OK---Windows Media Player will play it. DivX 2.0 Alpha says "Failed to Open". VirtualDub says "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'MR42' (Microsoft High-Speed MPEG-4 V2) "

Are you able to play the AVI with Windows Media Player? If not, you're lacking the appropriate codec, most probably one of the MPEG-4 family.
If you CAN play it thru WMP, I have no idea. Maybe TMPGEnc just doesn't recognize whatever codec the video was encoded with for some reason. Try converting it to an AVI with a different codec and see if that works. Indeo is generally pretty good quality.
