Hi. I've nearly got my Philips 3042 region 2 player changed so that it will play region 1 discs here in the states. Only problem is the picture is still black and white. I've tried changing the TV from Pal to NTSC on the preferences page but it keeps reverting back to PAL.

    Any suggestions?

Is the DVD you are trying to play PAL or NTSC?
You are changing the TV from PAL to NTSC?...an American TV?
Simply changing the region code does not solve the NTSC/PAL issue.

    Hech,

The player is european, the disc is U.S. and the TV is U.S.

I used the "138931" code to change the region from 2 to 1 on the player (philips 3042). The manual with the player says to go to the preferences menu, scroll to video stuff, select on TV type and then change from PAL to Multi or NTSC. My TV is also a Philips brand, flat screen, 2004. So I try to change this screen to NTSC but it doesn't take. It continues to revert to PAL.

    Something is fishy here.
It sounds like your player is a PAL player and it is outputting a false or "quasi" signal....it doesn't make sense to me though. Why would they have the "change output signal" option in the menu and not have it enabled? It's possible....anything is possible.
I've honestly never tried a European - non converting PAL player on an American TV....I've only gone the other direction.
How are you outputting from the player to the TV?

I'm using three RCA plugs at each end... two for stereo audio and one for the video. From the DVD player, yellow, red and white video and audio out... then into the TV to corresponding yellow, red and white video and audio in. Brand new, 24K gold connectors.

I'll try the next poster's suggestion and will post another message later...

No luck. Still in Black and white. I can't find anything online that tells me whether the TV is multi or NTSC, so I'm assuming it's NTSC. Guess I'll have to stick to watching A Hard Day's Night over and over....

Have you tried the 99990 hack?
There's also a setup code which changes US players to PAL which is 1379 so I'm guessing there is a code which changes it back to NTSC which is some variation on that?

EDIT: Just read in another thread that another Philips player will only convert PAL to NTSC if the region code is first stripped https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=325569

OK, so. I will start over by first doing a region-free hack (changing the DVD player to region 0), and THEN I will try to change the TV type from PAL to NTSC.

I read somewhere else that with my particular DVD player I should use the 13879 hack code under preferences because of some chip or something. I'll try the 99990 and if that doesn't work, then the original code.

I wonder if it's like a PC where you have to re-start everything to get it to take.

    Ha ha ha.

Wish me luck. The metal recycling is on Tuesday mornings in my part of Brooklyn.

It is true that the make of chipset was changed half way through the production run and that some hacks didn't work any more.

    VICTORY!!!!

    It worked.

Specifically, to convert a Philips DVP3042 from region 2 to any region AND to play it through an NTSC TV:

    Turn unit on
    Open tray
    Press set up on remote
Press arrow 3 times to right
    Press 138931 on keypad
Use up down arrow to change to region "0"
    Press set up
    Press OK

Next, to change picture from B&W to color

    Press set up on remove
arrow twice to right to video preferences screen
OK to keep it on this screen
    Arrow down to TV Type
Arrow right to column with PAL, Multi and NTSC
Arrow left or right to highlight "OK" (because it is in B&W it's tough to tell you are on OK)
OK again on next screen to confirm
    Set up
    OK

    Thanks for everyone's help!!!
