I have converted avi movies to dvd. I burn some and have no problem. Others I burn and they come out black and white with the screen flipping over with the sound playing fine but you cannot see the video. Some do this and others do not... I have no idea what the problem is anyone know?

    25 fps=PAL, 23.976, 29.something=NTSC.
I guess the AUTO setting in WinAvi means "Create a DVD using the same TV system as the source file.", not "automatically convert everything to NTSC"
Now, WinAVI is basically crap - Try convertx2dvd. It's rumored to do PAL source to NTSC DVD as good as it can be done.

Many, but not all, US sold DVD players can actually convert PAL output to NTSC output. Check the setup for your player and look at the video section. Unfortunately, the default for just about player on the planet is called something like "Auto", which means that it displays the exact same video output to the TV as the disc has. A PAL video will be displayed as PAL output and on an American NTSC TV, this will cause the black and white and rolling picture you see. The fix is to set the video output to NTSC, which forces everything to be displayed as NTSC. There's nothing wrong with converting AVIs to NTSC DVDs, but I just wanted to point out that it may not be necessary if your player allows you set all video output to NTSC. Keep in mind that some players in the USA do NOT convert PAL video at all. In those cases, you won't have any settings for video output in your DVD player's setup.
