I always covert my files with TmpgEnc plus 2.5 using the settings DVD to PAL 4.3 (Europe) and 2pass VBR. Tmpg always tells me the file is 720x576 which fills the TV screen, BUT occassionally the converted file ends up what looks like widescreen and does not fill the TV but has black lines above and below, I have to use the zoom function on the DVD player to fill the TV.

Can anyone tell me why this happens is it something to do with the way the original AVI was shot. I have tried other encoders (WinAvi, Cucusoft etc) but to no avail. Would love to know the answer why.

It happens because the only way to fill the screen without having black bars is to cut off up 30% of the picture. It's called Widescreen. If you put widescreen video in a 4:3 frame, you either have to cut off the sides, or put bars top and bottom. I suspect there is a setting in Tmpgenc to zoom i and crop, possible called fullscreen or Pan and Scan. I have no interest in finding what that setting is, and I cannot not understand why anyone would want to cut large chunks of the image to make it look taller. You end up getting a lot less, not a little more.

I even keep the widescreen aspect ratio when converting for my phone.

what do they look like before conversion ?

I have seen files , that are padded, the black bars are part of the image , so they stay with the image, when converted

it all depends on the original capture, the screen format and wheter or not cropping was needed OR not used when creating the file you have

  5. If you really want to cut off the left and right edges to get a full screen 4:3 picture go to Setting -> Advanced and select No Margin Keep Aspect Ratio.
