    Hi
I have a HP 740b dvd burner. I'm having a problem where i can burn some DVDs but after a while the drive stops recognizing the DVDs from the pack. If i get a new pack it works fine for a while and happens again...very wierd.
I saw a write up in PC Magazine about a utility that tells you the brand of DVD along with more info about it and can try to get the PC t work with it. It was in an issue around November (saw it at the dentist) I searched the PC Mag website but couldnt find it. Anyone know what it is or anything i could do.

    thanks

If the packs are of different brands, I suspect your drive is failing. The laser angles and other parameters of a write strategy are different for different brands, I'd guess your drive is having problems maintaining laser postion. When you change brands it may move the laser to the right position, then the position drifts off with other disks in the pack. Alternatively the disk mfg may lack quality control - look at the disks which it can recognize. Look for uneven cosating.

Some drives can be lubricated when they start to have problems positioning the laser. Try the forum for your drive manufacturer on

Just remember new drives can be had for about $30 so guage your time investment appropriately.

HP burner's where alway's a problem ... and it's getting on , and may have issue with the new generation media being produced .

Consider a new drive ... an lg would have less issue's .

You can alway's get a dud pack of media from any brand ... but this would not be the case as you have explained ... it's more the drive being affected after it has warmed up during the burn process .

Dont throw the old drive away ... use it as a reader for all your old burnt media ... user's dont understand the very fact that what you burnt 2 or more years ago , esspecially onto dvd's , may not be readable in a new unit ... when the old unit dosent have an issue with them .

The same issue dosent affect cd's as badly ... it's dvd's that suffer .
