  1. I bought a couple of DVDs that teach how to play the guitar. I wanted to make copies so I can keep the original in nice shape. I also bought a new computer with a dual layer burner, a generic one. The device manager lists it as dh16a1p. Well it wont let me rip anything. It says copy protected. No matter what program I use, I get the same thing. My old laptop will let me copy it though. Can make a burner with firmware that would prevent me from copying my disk. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

burners are low level hardware that just follow the instructions of the..... software. not much info to go on here but you might look at the differences between the 2 machines to figure out the problem. might it be the operating system? is one vista perhaps?

  3. Yes the one that wont do it is Vista. The other one, my laptop is XP. The system is Vistal Home Premium. 3 gigs of Ram. Dual core AMD 5000. It's a Gateway system. My friend has pretty much the same system and has no problem. Thanks.

If you have a dual layer burner - try imgburn or decrypter in read mode.

burn it to the DL disc.

BTW: I have zero issues with either in image read mode when the disc fits the size of the burn. YES: I am using Vista.

I have two SATA burners on a Vista Premium computer. No problems reading or writing discs with either one using DVDFab HD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and ImgBurn. Maybe Gateway put something in there that's interfering.

  8. Maybe I should swap out the burner?

At this point, it sounds like a software issue. Swapping hardware likely won't help.

What software are you trying to use to copy the disc? Nero/Roxio or whatever won't copy protected material. You would need to RIP it first using a program such as DVDFab Decrypter.

  10. I don't think it's a software problem. Any dvd runs in the background. Ive tried using Dvd Shrink, Nero Recode and Dvd Decrypter. Ive tried it using two movies I own. One is two years old and one is six. None of the programs will get more then a minute of ripping it and it tells me it is copy protected. To me it does sound like this burner that Gateway has installed but Im not sure. My laptop has no problem doing the job. Ideas? Thanks.

then remove that crappy GATEWAY drive and buy a SAMSUNG dvd burner. only then will that prove if the GATEWAY drive is a dud. with a new dvd burner you'll be able to find out whether or not it's a software conflict or the GATEWAY drive is defective/dead.

  13. I want to just say that the issue is fixed. I let a Gateway tech take control of my computer and she reinstalled the drive and now it works perfect. All is fine. I think Itunes caused the problem. After she was done I opened up Itunes and it said that I needed to reinstall it if I wanted to use it to burn because the drivers had changed. So my guess is Itunes. Thanks for the help.
