Is it possible to use an XP PRO install disk to "repair" windows XP HOME?
I've got a computer here that I'm fixing and my XP Home disk is scratched![]()
This guys computer has so much spyware on it that it won't read the onboard ethernet card or the PCI slot card. I got most of the spyware off but there's a few that refuse to be deleted. I tried everything I can think of. Spybot, hijack this, AD-Aware and some other from cnet.com. Nothing will take them off. Even the "Add-remove programs" window is screwed up. The "Uninstall" buttons are gone![]()
Aside from formatting and reinstalling XP do you guys think a "repair" will work?
Or should I slick it and start over?
Thanks

With that amount of spyware, a repair won't do you any good. You will be better of reformatting the computer.

Turn Off "System Restore" and try Webroot's SpySweeper. They have a 30 day on their site.
Also, try the cleaning in Safe Mode.
Chances are, however, that you'll have to reinstall. -
also use Microsofts new spyware remover. Its actually pretty decent. Gets things others miss.

I have not tried to do a xp install/repair from this but is a useful cd to have -
I know all about Bart's pe, but you still cannot use a xp home disc to repair a xp pro install nor can an xp pro disc fix an xp home install.
You need to have the disc that you used to do the original install.
That is like saying you can use your windows me disc to repair windows 2000.
It is not possible. -
but you could repair xp home or pro with a different disc of the same os, i assume, provided you had the serial # for that disc. correct? i don't see why not.

You don't need the 'original' CD but the version of the OS has to match, i.e. Home to repair Home or Pro to repair Pro.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -

Well I only ask because XP pro has all the drivers/networking additions that Home doesn't. So i thought that since the core files are the same that it would work.
I reformatted the dumb thing anyhow
