  1. I've got a problem with the playback of mpeg files using media player classic (latest version). Not sure what I did but starting about a week ago whenever I open mpeg files (also seems to happen with mpeg-2 files) the output is really dark, usually you can't see anything though on occasion you can make out some vauge outlines. Here is an example of an anime music video with the problem: http://home.comcast.net/~jdub8/animeface.jpg (really look for it and you can see a guys profile from the left)

The problem does not seem to cross over to windows media player 10 and my dvd playback software seems to still work (windvd6).

EDIT: I forgot to add that before uninstalling and re-installing ffdshow in the configuration menu for codecs I noticed it said "disabled broken" for the mpeg and mpeg2 codecs and tried changing it to libavcodec/libmpeg2 but to no avail. I tried again just now and nothing seems to change but it doesn't say "broken" like before.
Also in an unrelated but perhaps similar note I've had trouble playing back wmv/asf files in media player classic for as long as I can remember in terms of seeking, it takes a good 5-10 seconds to get to a new place and is very annoying (its pushed me to use WMP 10 to view such files)

I cleaned out my video codecs from system in control panel and reinstalled ffdshow but to no avail. Heres the output from avicodec of my installed codecs:
    http://home.comcast.net/~jdub8/DirectShowfilterslist.txt
    http://home.comcast.net/~jdub8/VideoCodecsList.txt

    Windows XP pro SP1
Latest ffdshow - uninstalled and re-installed
    Latest xvid
    Latest divx
No codec packs (to my knowledge)

    Thanks for any help.

MPC uses a built in MPEG splitter and decoders unless you specifically disabled them.

There were some updates recently (like yesterday) if I recall correctly to the mpeg decoder, so you might want to try a cvs build and see if it is any different.

Could be an output issue though, like one player using overlay and the other VMR7/9.

  3. So how did it get changed? How do I change it back?

I'll give your MPC build a chance but I'd prefer to know how to solve this in the future.
