  1. Microsoft DV driver for Sony DV appears to capture in half DV resolution (360x240), even though the captured AVI file reports video properties of 720x480. The reason I noticed this is when I play the AVI file with Windows Media Player and set the Zoom to 100%, the movie frame appears only 360x240. The frame size becomes 720x480 only after I set the Zoom to 200%. Can anybody explain why? Here is my setup.

    OS: Windows XP
    laptop: Compaq Presario 1700 (933MHz PIII, 256MB)
    1394 firwire: built-in
    cam: Sony D8 TRV330
hard drive: passes the data rate test of Pinnacle Studio (about 15Mbps).
capture software: Windows Move Maker, Pinnacle Studio 7 SE, MGI VideoWave III SE

  2. :o Ya, mine does this too. The only way I have captured at 720x480 with the MS Dv, is to use windows movie maker, which sucks!

  3. Your problem is not in MS CODEC. It is in Media Player's setting, in playing DV AVI files.

Your AVI has no problems at all. DV AVI is fixed, and there really is nothing to change in there for capturing (or should I say transferring) to your HD.

You should be able to change this in Properties in Media player. Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact steps, so I'd suggest you play around.

  4. Try loading the DV AVI file into VDub or TMPGEnc. They should report the true resolution of the file.
