Having problems turning AVI into MPEG

I want to make Vcd so i need to turn my Avi into mpeg.
There is a few things i dont understand.

Im using TMPGEnc to turn avi into mpeg, but for some reason sometimes it wont encode sound.why??
So i tried to use another prog to encode the sound separatly(i used avi2wav).
So far it seems it worked good.but i dont understand why TMPGenc cant encode sound sometimes.

I got this other movie i tried to encode...all worked good,but the encoding time is just sooo slow!
the movie is in 2 part.CD 2 took me 3 hours to encode(thats normal speed for my comp i think).Then after that i encoded CD1 and it took me 22 hours!!.I dont get it.
Not to mention that after turning those 2 AVI files into mpeg,my nero wouldnt burn them into VCD directly...he had to encode it again(2 hours encode for each CD)

Also i got this other avi movie which i didnt have to turn into mpeg to make a vcd.The file is clearly an AVI and all i had to do was using Nero to make vcd,no encoding needed,thats wierd.

so can someone help me?and maybe tell me if the encidong speed is normal for my comp?

Have you tried using virtualdub with frameserve? I had this problem awhile back and this seemed to work for me.

First of all I think you really need to read up on some of the guides and info all over this site, but I will try to answer a few of your questions.

TmpGenc does not cope correctly with all possible sound formats. If the audio in your avi is Ac3, TmpGenc doesn't normally encode this at all, or if it does it sounds terrible. Also if the audio is VBR, you will generally get sync problems with TmpGenc. The usual advice is to extract the audio from the avi with virtualdub, converting it to uncompressed wav format in the process, and use that file as the audio input when you encode.

Only a guess, but I expect you encoded the 2nd file with incorrect settings (DVD vs VCD perhaps). Anyway, this would explain the extended encoding time and would also explain why Nero had to re-encode it.

Nero will encode most avi formats to VCD, howver its quality is not too good. Much better results can be obtained using TmpGenc, CCE or just about any other standalone encoder.
