  1. I am having trouble capturing since I installed MMC 8.1 in Windows XP. I was capturing ok before the installation. Now that I have intalled it, I can't go back to previous versions, they now don't capture either. When I try to capture, the capture window opens but the time does not increment and a file is saved but it is only 42 KB.

Has anyone else had this problem? Luckily, I have a multiboot system and can still capture under Win98. I upgrades because certain things weren't working in MMC 7.7 and I followed ATI's instructions during the installation.

    Any help is appreciated.

I had this happen on my upgrade to 7.7, the best way I found to repair this was to uninstall everything, then reboot and reinstall the newest video driver, then follow ATI's instructions for loading the new 8.1. I have seen that some people needed to delete entries from the registry for this to work, I didn't, hope this helps.

    Regedit:
    Search Term: AVBISurf.ax
Change: "ThreadingModel" from "Both" to "None."

I was having the same problem with MMC 7.7 and now with 8.1 on my AIW Radeon. Sometimes it captures, sometimes it does what Bigbus wrote. I will try the fix and will post results.

BigBus , I assume you did the same as me and updated the cap and normal drivers at the same time and installed DX9 and encoder , then the 2 MMC files , mine does it as well , I`m going to try changing the drivers back one generation and I`ll post back results unless Kabaneros results come up trumps of course .

  6. I did the registry fix and it helped until I tried to cap from the scheduler. Once I did that, I was back to not recording at all.

I had also uninstalled everything, reinstalled a previous version (Jan 2003 software) and came up with the same problems. When I went all the way back to the original CD with MMC 7.1 all was well (except there aren't up to date cap templates).

Should I try uninstalling everything and then wiping the registry of all ati entries and installing from scratch?

    Thanks for the replies,

I made the registry fix and was able to capture three times. Then it stop capturing. Then I rebooted computer and was able to capture only once, and then it stop.

What the hell is going on????

  8. Kabanero,

That is exactly what I have been fighting with. I then get it to capture several times then close the AIW TV program, reopen it and can capture again. If I do anything else like just open the settings window (to look at the scheduler or capture settings) or delete the test files I have captured, then I can't capture anymore (and even if I reboot).

Like I said in my previous messages, I even uninstalled everything and installed an earlier version and now get the same results. 8.1 must have changed some XP setting. Is there anyway to reinstall directx 8.1 and go back to the XP defaults?

  9. Bodyslide,

Do you know what registry entries were deleted? I would like to go back to square one if I can (and maybe avoid 8.1 if I have to).

    Bigbus,

It's not MMC 8.1, I think it is WDM capture drivers problem because I was having the same problems with MMC 7.7.0.1.
But I recall now that I didn't have this problem with old WDM drivers, which is 6-13-10-6173v3. I will install them and try with MMC 8.1.

    Regards.

Just installed 6-13-10-6173v3 WDM capture drivers, but it didn't help.
I was able to capture only once after I rebooted my computer.
I guess, Catalyst drivers don't work well with old Radeon cards.

May be somebody else has more tips?

  12. I tried it too and it made no difference. I think during the installation, something was changed in the registry or somewhere and by uninstalling, we aren't removing it.

I wrote to ATI but have gotten no response. Any other ideas?

I know 7.1 and its drivers work but I can't capture DVD with that.

Ah yes, the ATI MMC pain. I know it well.

Remember this rule: you do NOT have to install EVERYTHING from any MMC package. Custom install. Just pick the components you want.

I have a hybrid of 7.1, 7.5, and 7.6 running, and that's what I have found to work best.

My TV, what we all capture with, is running at 7.5 in a Windows ME machine. I found other to crash or fail often. Keep the File Player at 7.1. Put everything else to 7.6 or higher.

It's a great card, just some minor software bugs that you've got to identify and then work around. Not too bad at all.

I can move my card to a Win2K machines, and the same theories have held up for me. No experience on XP. It's not a very video-friendly environment anyway, as professional experience has shown.

My card is the 7000 chipset, but the 8000 should also run on the software, and I believe the newer 9000 can also use the older software.

In the case of ATI, "upgrade" did not always mean improvement.

  17. I run Cat 2.3,MMC7.7.1 and DX8.1 on my AIW7500 and never run into this problem. It seems from reading other posts those who use Cat 2.4 or newer are having problems.I suppose that is because they added Smartgart(Fast-Writes support) to the Control Panel which is on Radeon 8000-9000 cards.
Anybody else have the 60Hz refreshrate problem?

  18. In Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers; try deleting all of the entries that start with "ATI WDM" and reboot. On reboot, it should find and install all of the drivers for the devices. This has worked for me in the past.

  19. Has anyone gotten MMC8.1 to work on a non-Radeon AIW Card?
I am unable to get it to set up for my AIW 128 16MB AGP128.
I downloaded, install DX 9 and the other software it requires.
How? Please tell us your steps?

    Thanks

  20. Got my previous version working again. I uninstalled 8.1 and all its parts, reinstalled the software from Sep 2002 and installed MMC 7.7.0.1. I initially had the same problems and then I went in and manually changed the drivers for all of the ATI WDM drivers and made sure they matched the capture driver version I was using. I now am capturing with no problems.

I finished up by deleting all of the 8.1 software I downloaded and only kept what I am using now. I hope in the future I won't be tempted by ATI's updates.

Thanks for the help. The Rage3d forum was a big help also.

Captures with 8.1 look like crap.

I was tempted, stupidly, and took 5 hours to undo my mistake. Even if the next ATI update comes with a Playboy bunny that pops out of the disk drive, I refuse to update ever again. I'll just be happy with what I have.

    Improved encoding indeed! BS!

  22. Thanks everybody for your help!
Finally I have my AIW Radeon working!
I have been updating drivers and MMC in hope of my card working again, but NO!!!!
I had MMC 8.1 and Catalyst 3.2 installed in WinXP and sometimes after a reboot it would capture, but never when I needed it to. Was wondering if I should reinstall Windows or buy a new card when I read this discussion.
    So...
    This weekend I did this:
    1. Deleted all oemxx.inf/pnf in \windows\inf with reference to ATI or Radeon in them
    2. Deleted Display Driver in ControlPanel - Install and Remove Programs
    3. Opened Regedit and searched for and deleted all entries with Radeon in them
    4. Rebooted
    5. Installed WDM Capture Driver ver 6.13.10.518
    6. Installed Display Driver ver 6.13.10.6071
    7. Rebooted

Now my original AIW Radeon works with MMC8.1 and with no frames dropped.
    Maybe this can help someone...........

I was suffering from the same problem after "upgrading" to MMC8.1 with the 42k problem , I got mine to work by :

    1.uninstalling control panel
    2.uninstalling display driver
    3.rebooting
    4.installing tv-capture-wdm-6-14-01-6178v1.exe
    5.installing wxp-w2k-radeon-7-81-021218a-007192c-efg.exe
    6.rebooting
    7.install control-panel-7-81-021218a-007192c-efg.exe
    8.rebooting
    9.everything works

I only ever had to resort to reg editing with Win98 , where its a bloody pain in the arse .

    Spec: AIW Radeon & XP

  24. I finally got mine working also. I did basically the same as the previous 2 posts. I first installed all of the latest ATI software (vid driver, cap driver, control panel and mmc 8.1) on Windows 98 with no problem (after uninstalling everything and cleaning out the registry). I then tried all of the software again in XP and couldn't get it to capture (even after complete unintall and cleaning of registry). I finally tried the capture driver from September 2002 and now it works great (with everything new except the capture driver). :D

It seems there is something wrong with the latest XP capture driver (it worked fine in 98). :x

I must be in the minority here for both ease of installation (no probs) and getting great captures. Though this is the first time I can claim this for ATI's upgrades with my AIW Radeon.

After installing DX9, and ignoring the WMP9 requirement (which is not listed as so in the driver section), I then installed the latest Catalyst, control panel and capture drivers with NO UNINSTALLS. Not a hitch.

Capturing was slick as can be. Since I didn't have to (or rather, just didn't) uninstall anything all my previous settings were still around. However, (a good thing) ATI now, instead of only one custom size/resolution) provides the ability to use 4 preset OR user defined ones. I had a hard time choosing D1 or 1/2 D1 but ended up just staying with D1.

Other than a very slight uniform haze (brightness / contrast ??) on the capture, it looks just as good as the captures on my Dish PVR508 which I consider to be excellent on my 36" Sony. And the bonus: a one hour capture at 4mbs/2.5mbs avg (gonna see what 3mb avg/6mb will do) is running about 1gb an hour AND absolutely no frame loss and 100% audio sync through the whole capture that I can cut with TMPGenc (a lot slower on DVD vs. VCD )

Next, I'm playing with the Video Soap settings to see if I can get rid of that haze thing or even try the brightness controll on the channel settings. Also, trying the 'despeckle' versus the default settings with good results too. This could get really fun. Now I can capture direct to DVD, cut the commercials and to the burner in under an hour. Just in time for the new burner. This will mean I can probably get 5 1hr episodes (w/o commercials) to one dvd-r.
    Have a good one,

    neomaine

I had to go back to capture driver 6125v5 and then it worked in WinXP with my AIW Radeon (7200) 32 MB and ATI MMC 8.1. The only way I could downgrade the wdm drivers was to manually "update driver" and select "don't search" and "I have a driver disc" on each ATI WDM device in device manager.
