    I have just bought a new computer, a p4 1.7 ghz with 40gb hd, 512mb rd ram.
I am planing on creating svcds. How long will it take to get the svcd from the dvd movie? how long will the encoding time to mpg2 take?

  2. from start to finish on a 90min. movie and if everyhting you use works without a problem, say give yourself about 4-6 hours.
Thats why I went with a MPEG2 SVCD hardware encoder, takes me 90min. to record movie, 4-5min. to demux MPEG2 into a SVCD, burn onto 2 99min. CD-R's(another 28-30 minutes with 8x burner) finished. So I have a movie done in about 2.5 hours.
But beware, MPEG2 Hardware encoders range from $199 to $299 in price. Well worth it to me, I hate wasting time.

  3. It depends on what filters you're running and the encoder you use. I have a Tbird 1.2Ghz and using CCE I get takes me 1~1.25x the runtime to encode an MPEG2 stream. With TMPGenc it takes my 2.5~3x the runtime.

If you're a 100% newbie you might want to look at DVD2SVCD (www.doom9.org under 'the guides') which is a frontend that will take care of pretty much everything for you. I choose 'don't create image' and then use TSCV to add chapters/menus, and burn with nero.

To run DVD2SVCD you should get the latest software bundle (http://dvd2svcd.doom9.net), CCE 2.5sp (the demo can be found at the doom9.org guide for the program). This is the CCE demo, so there'll be a watermark/logo in the bottom right of the screen. Although I've heard a rumor that there's a crack to get rid of this
